I am trying to find my birth mother the only details I have is name and DOB but the issue is her surname I believe to be an adopted name so cannot find a birth record.
I know a few details about locations over the 1980's and 1990's but no-one has heard from her in 10-15 years.
any suggestions or tips will be a huge help.
Thank you
Kim

Presumably you are in touch with birth family then?
She may have remarried, moved or even died I guess

Yes I am but details are very limited and official documents seem to stop in the early 1990's and I cannot find anything on her.
I am thinking possibly electoral registers might be a possibility, if she kept the name that is.

You could try ER on 192.com, and livingrelativesearch.co.uk which are indexed.

If you were to research ER at the main library (normally) close to her previous address, they are listed by Ward and Road, not name so it would be quite a task looking through them in person.

Ancestry (which you could access from your local library) has BMD up to 2005/6 or there abouts. Presumably this site does as well.

Depending on her age, she might have gone into a nursing home, and may not be registered on the ER.....or even moved abroad.

Have you tried facebook if she is relatively young?

Hi,

Thank you for the tips, I have tried facebook (it was one of the first places I looked lol) but I don't think she is still using the name I have for her. I was thinking of trying the marriage records in the area I knew she was in last, are these easy to access. I have to admit I am finding it all a bit puzzling and I am not sure of what I am looking at lol.
She was born in 68 so not old enough to be in a home yet I don' think. I know she has had further children but wouldn't know where they would have been registered and what their details are so cannot really look for them either!??

I have done a general search on all records and have found some marriage records but there doesn't appear to be DOB available - does anyone know how I can find it out to confirm that the person on the marriage record is the person I am looking for?

The age will only show on the actual certificate I., afraid so you would have to buy it for the info

If you were adopted, have you added your name to the adoption contact register?

Kimmy84 Report 25 Sep 2012 21:40

I wasn't adopted my birth mother was (which is what is making it so difficult to trace her I think!)
Thank you though. - I was hoping that wouldn't be the case! Oh well.

Where was she living when you were born? Have you look at old electoral rolls for that address?

Kim says she was'nt adopted....so I would think she knows her mother?

Not sure why its difficult to trace her without her birth name? doubt whether she would be using it if she was adopted and you know how old she is

Hi all,

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I know my birth mothers details as in the name listed on my birth cert and her dob. I know she moved away from where I grew up not long after I was born ( I was raised by paternal family)
My problem is I dont know if she married - I know she had further children but dont know where she had them, their names or ages ( only one was approx 1987 a boy)
I am hoping that continued to register her maiden name as Stanbridge and will try tracing marriage / birth records.
Fingers crossed - thanks everyone!
:-)
