As a nice English person, who is willing to help out even a Scot (heh heh) I have had a nosy around this place on google map street view (very pleasant!). It looks tiny. I found the bridge but alas no shop now as far as I can see. As it is a small place, I bet someone knows something.

There is a little shop/post office, why not go for it and write to them - they probably know the community well:

I am trying to get in touch with my niece Joan Hamilton. I believe she lives in Crossford, Lanarkshire. She married an englishman, probably a youthful indiscretion, but I don't know her married name. Her dad, my oldest brother John and his wife Meg, owned the corner store by the bridge to the Braidwood rd (?).
Would love to get any info that would let me reconnect.
