First time on this section - confusing. Like others, I don't quite know if Ian (and others) have information for the original author, or if he is the original author and is upset because nobody will answer his query. I think if I was looking for a living relative, and I may well do in the future, I would expect that person to ask for some family information in a personal message that a complete strange would not know.

A genuine family member enquiring about living relatives would be happy to quote mutual acquaintances. Don't forget, the children from two marriages might not want to know each other. Ian doesn't say if he is a member of the family and this alone would stop me giving our information.

Sorry, a very wordy passage from a newbe.

I read and didn't reply because I also was not sure of what Ian was saying exactly . I looked at this phrasing

"Myself and others attempting to find details of Rachel's latter life, and search for information relating to certain of the children have been met with what one can describe as a "conspiracy of silence"

and I wondered whether the 'conspiracy of silence' was deliberate, ie Rachel does not want to be found, and the people who know details are respecting that.

But as I said, I may be reading it wrong. Also Ian has not said whether those who have not replied have actually read his messages.

From my prospective i thought that Ian's thread was his frustration with a member who was trying to find living relatives? but then he felt the usual frustration when their was no input from the thread author to help resolve the problem/enquiry,

This type of thread on find living relative board makes me suspicious of the reason behind the request

Roy
That is why I assumed Ian wanted info, not just to vent frustration, hence my trying to follow it through.

Response from Ian would be good!

Ian, I have in the past found it very frustration when you cannot get a response to your enquiry from someone asking for help it some times feels like trying to get blood out of a stone,

Had your enquiry been posted on the Genealogy chat or general board my response would have been as above but the response i have given in my first two post's is because your thread is on the find living relatives board which due to the nature of this board i view as a totally different entity

I try to add a reply relevant to the board the thread is on, otherwise their would be no point have a separate boards for each type of request/enquiry

Thanks for your input Porkie Pie.
Your points raised are noted, and perhaps those who do not respond
might take note, whether on living relatives or otherwise.
Just out of interest, during this month I have made around 28 contacts with people who have trees on this site, and only had two replies. The replies were negative but they were replies.
Best wishes,
Ian

I haven't replied because I am not quite sure that I understand what Ians problem is.

Is it that people post and then dont reply? ( Like Ian himself!)
Is it that he cant find anything more about Rachel?

Without knowing the reason for Ian wanting to find out about Rachel I would be reluctant to post info too!

40 members have viewed this but only i have added,

40 views is only minute compared to the membership but as this board is full of requests from mainly none regulars on the board i suspect the the majority of views where members who help,

It looks like members are happy with the way things are :-S

How many members on hear who help find living people for anyone asking? would be happy if it was you who had been "found" by someone who either you did not want contact with or who's agenda was not genuine and they just wanted to find you to make your life hell :-(

this is my main concern with this board

Just saying

To be honest i have noted this and have come to the conclusion that most of the thread type you refer to are people who are not genuine?

It would be best if before handing over any information members should establish what connection that person has to the enquiry and to get some dialog going first,

but i note on most occasions a member may ask such questions and then others just add information without waiting for a reply

Their needs to be moderation on this board and i do no that Joy has been asking for this and has a thread on suggestions board to that affect but has not been given the support she requires either from GR or the majority of members

This is a serious problem that should be sorted sooner rather than later

If GR are not going to do this then could members who help set the rules them selves?

Roy

Edit, I feel that if a solution is not found then finding living relatives facility on GR should be removed

Ian James Report 22 May 2012 11:37

I am a regular user of genes but am becoming increasingly disheartened and infuriated by the amount of people on genes who fail to respond to requests for information on a posting they have made. Failure to respond in either a negative or positive way.
As a result I am now appealing for some assistance from the general membership.
I will briefly outline my quest and can give more information to thos who contact me.
Rachel was born in Devon in 1933 and married twice, 1954 and 1958.
There were five children from this marriage, plus tow more, twins, from a further relationship, born in 1970.
Myself and others attempting to find details of Rachel's latter life, and search for information relating to certain of the children have been met with what one can describe as a "conspiracy of silence"
I appreciate there is little which can be done to make people respond, but, why oh why do they put up such posts in the first place.
I shall be grateful for any help.
Ian
