Well, its probably best to just say that you are tracing your family history, and wonder if they share the same (grandparent). I certainly wouldn't jump in and say your are more closely related. If the person you are writing to is elderly, suggest they show the letter to a close relative or trusted friend. Its often a good idea to say that if they decide not to reply, you will respect their privacy and not attempt to conact them again.

If you are loking for a sibling, its better for a trained 3rd party to be the co-between.

Always put your name and address on the reverse of the envelope, and enclose a SAE to encourage a reply.

There are a number of sites you can use to trace living relatives.

https://www.livingrelativesearch.co.uk/
http://www.192.com/
http://www.peopletracer.co.uk/
http://www.eroll.co.uk/

All of the above are subscription or pay to view, but some can give you a free partial address result, which you can try and cross reference.

http://www.thephonebook.bt.com
is an online BT phone book.

We have to remember that people could opt out of the commercial ER after 2002, and many no longer have a land line, only use a mobile phone, or are ex-directory

If you do find an address, its worth finding out when it was last sold on

http://www.zoopla.co.uk/.

For instance, William is on the ER until 2011 - check the address to see if it has been sold in the last year. New occupants may have a forwarding address, or know where he went. If you are desparate, they may be willing to give you the address of their or his solicitors and try and trace him via them.

Thank you for your help detective. Ive never done this before and am slowly gathering some info together. Is it ok to just randomly write (snail Mail!!) to someone telling them that you may be related to them? I just dont want to intrude or bother people but i need to find answers. Thank you again! :)

There are several William T Maloney's listed on a free search on 192.com

On livingrelativesearch.co.uk (free search) partial addresses given are

Newton Abbot TQ12
Wigan WN6
Slough SL1
London SE13 (x2)

Re-searching on 192.com with the name and TQ12, if we were to assume he still lives in the same area, you can see the names of other residents to 2011.

Even if he has moved, they may know how to get in contact with him.
You can purchase credits to view the whole entry.

Normally the stock answer is that anyone on this site knowing the people you are looking for, is remote.....but it has happened :-)

Does anyone know Royston A Maloney and (twin Brother?) William T Maloney ( Torbay Area?) 1958?
Do they have Brothers and sisters called Julie 1965, Steven L 1962, Wayne Graham 1966??
Is their Father William Thomas Maloney and Mother Blanche (Daisy) Maiden Name Skinner???
I really need to contact these people and have messaged the ones I have details for but just incase they arent active members or check emails regularly i was wondering if anyone actually knew them personally or are in contact with them in some other way!? I just need to clear up some family tree details as soon as I can really because the information I have discovered esp about Roy matches what I know abouyt the father and would like to chat with them. (esp Royson/Roy but all the others could help greatly!!)
Thank you for reading. :)
