Gladys F Poole(formally Spatchurst) Born 27 Nov 1900. She is mother of Gillian Christine Poole born 25th January 1934 and father is Cyril Francis Poole (stated to be Ground Engineer deceased). Birth cert for Gillian C is GRO 1934 Qtr M Vol 03a page 141 registered Uxbridge Middlesex. Address at birth 61 Lansbury Drive Hayes Middx. Gillian was adopted by Elsie Mabel Sampson ( formally Spatchurst) at the above address.
We can't find any trace of Cyril F Poole in BMDs nor can we find a marriage ref for Gladys.
Can anyone help with information on Cyril- Birth Marriage Death?

I agree Gladys did not marry, there was talk in the Spatchurst family that Gladys's partner was already married and at that time in the uk it seemed possible for the wife to refuse a divorce. What I don't know is whether it was possible/easy to falsify a child's birth certificate.
There is also the question of the death cert for Cyril Francis Poole. He must have died in the time from the conception to the birth of Gillian Christine Poole 1933 to 25 Jan 1934.I could not find any death certificate.
The other piece of family heresay evidence suggested the father of Gillian was in the RAF so that occupation "Ground Engineer" sounds plausible.
We also know that from around 1935/38 onwards Gladys Spatchurst spent all her life until her death with Sydney Pethwick who worked for Carreeras Cigarette Manufacturers(Nottingham) in the 1930s and 1940s. He was also stated to be married but could not get a divorce from his wife.
The Marriage of CF Poole to Phillips GRO 1928 Qtr Jun Basford Vol 7b Page 561 seems to ring the right sort of bells.
In 1934 were adoptions formal and documented?. The address on the birth cert for Gillian was the address of the adoptees Edgar Stanley Sampson and wife Elsie Mabel Sampson(formaly Spatchurst) and as far as I know Cyril Poole never lived there nor did Gladys unless it was a very short stop over

It's quite easy to 'falsify' a birth cert......the informant simply lies. Who registered Gillian's birth?

'Deceased' doesn't have to be true - in fact, it probably wasn't. She lied about being married, so why not everything else?

If you think the marriage in Basford may be relevant, buy the cert to find out his occupation

The adoption would have been a formal process, but only Gillian would be allowed any sort of access to the documentation.

We know Gillian was adopted by Elsie Mabel Sampson( formally Spatchurst) & Husband Edgar Stanley Sampson. We don't know if this adoption was done through the official channels but assume it was.
On the birth certificate the informant to the registrar was stated on the birth certificate to be G F Poole (Mother), also the mother on the certificate was stated to be Gladys Florence Poole formaly Spatchurst..
I will take a chance and buy the marriage certificate of Poole Cyril Francis to Phillips 1928 Basford 7b 561.
If this fails we may never know the truth about Gillian's father.

It appears to look like Gladys and Elsie Mable were possibly sisters,

also Victor,,,,,it will have th word---*-Adopted * hand written on the birth certifciate,countersigned by Sup Registrar,if it wa formal adoption by court application.....even on 1934 birth certificates,,,

You are correct Gladys and Elsie were sisters.
Gillian's Birth Certificate is a certified copy and on the right hand side bottom corner, it has following typed statement
"Adopted" Algn. R. Woodbridge Superintendent Registrar.
It looks as if the adoption was officially arranged.

I'm afraid that unless you are able to find out if his name was genuine, and I'm not sure how that can be achieved, and roughly when he was born, you can't hope to find records.

the best bet would be the marriage certifciate of Cyril in Basford,,,,to compare occupations.

he may have just agreed to have his name put on the birth certifciate of G,,,,,and no proof would need to be shown if the parent registered the birth as a married woman or out of ignorance when asked name of the father.....?

it looks like the birth mum went to her sisters to have the baby and couldnt look after her as a single mum,,,,,also if Cyril was married and couldnt leave his wife then it was perhaps the best and only option at that time.
also one doesnt have to permantly at an address given on any certificate,
