Dereka P GAMLIN - New Zealand...?

Hi All,
I've just found a passenger list for the Shaw Savill Line ship 'Southern Cross' with my 2nd cousin Dereka P Gamlin named on it as emigrating to New Zealand.
Dereka was born on 30 Jun 1937, in Bristol, UK to parents Frederick George & Muriel Gamlin.
The ship sailed from Southampton UK on 02 Mar 1960. The destination port is unknown but the ship's arrival in NZ was probably about mid-April. The passenger list states she was 22 years old, single, a typist, and her last UK address was 43 Shadwell Road, Bishopston, Bristol 7.
If anyone has any further news of her, that would be great.
Regards,
Phil Curtis...

Update: I've just found the following electoral roll entries on Ancestry which may relate to Dereka:
1963 Dereka Pamela Judd ~ Miramar ~ Wellington
1969 Dereka P Judd ~ Rotorua ~ Bay of Plenty
1981 Dereka Pamela Jolly ~ Miramar ~ Wellington

Hello Liz,
Many thanks for your reply. Oddly, she doesn't appear at all on here although her brother, David Gamlin, does. She isn't on FR either.
I've left a message on Rootsweb NZ and am about to leave one on Genealogy.com NZ, so I'll see what happens!
Regards,
Phil

Philip ...the 'National LIbrary of NZ' (on-line) has an 'Ask a Librarian' service ...they will check electoral rolls up to present day ....also newspaper death notices etc.

Trudging through electoral rolls to present day... that is very time consuming as people on the electoral rolls can only be found by name prior to 1981 as per Ancestry.

After that there are just too many electorates to thumb through individually... there are 63 electorates and 7 Maori electorates and that is a lot of books to go through.

All the libraries I have been to here in NZ you do it yourself..

Thank you Valerie and Persephone for your replies.

Persephone, many thanks for letting me know about the Dereka Jolly on Facebook.
So that's me dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century then, and finally having a reason to sign up to it!
I've sent her a message and will let you know what happens...

Regards,

Phil

Philip... I checked the phone book and could not find a D P Jolly.. Do you have her partner's name? I don't have a sub to ancestry running at the moment.. so can't check the 1981 electoral roll to find out.

Cheers Persie

Hi again,
A correspondent from NZ says she first married Brian Maxwell Judd in 1962, then married David Lachlan Jolly in 1981, presumably in the Wellington area because that's where they were living in the 1981 electoral roll - and his name is all the info I have on him.
I haven't yet checked the Whte Pages but I'll do it later today.

Persie,

Many thanks for your kind offer. If you could give them a call that would be great.

I did have a look in the Wellington White pages but there were no D Jollys so I kind of ground to a halt there.

I've not heard anything from the Dereka P Jolly on Facebook either: she probably thought it was some kind of weird new scam and is keeping her head down!

I have been to our local library and looked up the Wellington electoral roll and the Rongotai one which includes Miramar... I also checked out Pukekohe and a few electorates around that area.

I am away this weekend but when I get back I will go through all of the electoral rolls... thought she may have gone back to Bay of Plenty.

If she has died since 1981, there is no way you can access her death record on line..Only can access people born 80 years ago which would mean today's date 1932. The only other way is to trudge through the microfiche at the central library on the off chance.

Sorry didn't get back to you earlier Philip.
