Finding a non active GR member???

Hi, I am writing from South Australia. My grandmothers family came from London in 1920 and after years of performing hundreds of google searches on her father today I found a Genes Reunited query with so much personal detail it could only be my family!!! Sadly it was posted in 2003. Someone else replied in 2007 but there wasnt a comment from the gentleman. He doesnt have an unusual name - where shall I start looking if he doenst reply. I am guessing he is still in the UK.

To make matters worse my grandmother was still alive in 2003!!!

Is there white pages online for the UK??

Cheers...Kim

if its a common name, you may be in trouble :-0

Try
192.com (ER on line, but pay to view full details)
ThephonebookBT.com (free)
www.livingrelativesearch.co.uk (free partial results, pay to view full details)
http://www.eroll.co.uk/ (never used it, but worth a try)

After about 2006, we had the opportunity to opt out of commercial ER listings, so after then, although the person may be registered, you could only check in person on the ER at the Council Office or local main library. ER's are search-able in paper form by address, not name.

It might be worth trying to trace down through the records, to him and his wife/children. With a bit of luck, most of the events will be in the same general area, which could help to limit possible addresses.

Have a look on Facebook and Friendsreunited. Even if he isn't listed, his children, if any, might be.

If you think he was elderly, deaths up to 2005/6 are available on this site, and others....mainly subscription ones. The same would apply for a spouse. Informants could be next of kin, and give an address.

The 1911 census has been available for a while - you may be able to find your immigrant family before they left, on that.

Have you tried to send a PM?

I'm guessing that you refer only to messages posted on one of the boards................

Wow....thankyou so much for that....I am thinking if my great grandfather is his great uncle - he would be retired maybe (as I am in my 40s). There has been a lot of tv advertising in Australia by Ancestry.com so am guessing I might try there as I have a tree there too.

Will give the other sites a try...thanks again...

Kim Report 3 Jan 2012 13:23

I have tried a PM but he didnt reply to one done in 2007 by another person, so I am not holding my breath.

Can I ask why the tree matches no longer come up, or am I missing something - dont get on this site very often.

Thanks....

Kim, how do you know he didn't reply to a PM?

There isn't any way that you can know whether another person's PM has been acknowledged

I think you are unfamilar with this site, and are confusing postings on the message boards with PM's (Private Messages) which are sent to the person via GR by clicking on his or her name.

GR then send notification to the person's registered e-mail address.

If, however, the e-mail details are no longer applicable to the member, GR will not be able to advise them of the PM

Sorry, I meant he didnt respond to the board message in 2007.

I am pretty sure I posted a message to the person not on the message board, but I will check again. I know I have changed internet providers a few times over the years but I make a point of using yahoo or hotmail for ongoing stuff. I will check my outbox, I'm pretty sure thats what I did.

Thanks everyone for your help....

Flick - Doesnt the little green envelope indicate the private message in the sent box hasnt been opened?

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 4 Jan 2012 00:17

That's right - the green closed envelope means it hasn't been opened :-(

Apart from medical reasons etc, he could have changed his internet provider/usual email address but not updated his account on GR.

Wow...thankyou Jax, just read your other message....Yes all the info you have posted is correct. It took me a while and a bit of $$ to get this info - you have done well. I thought it would have to be one of Cecil's brothers children's son....will explore one of my other trees more to see if he has been on any of the other websites I use....thanks Kim

His sister Caroline ended up remarrying and must have been alone again later as she came to help out in Cecil's shop in rural South Australia....she didnt stay long, maybe due to arriving in the beginning of summer (no electricity) We have had 2 days of 40 degrees plus recently, almost 2 weeks of over 38 degrees a few years ago....bet she was equally as shocked going back to an English Winter!!!
