Its a pity he doesn't have a middle name.

Have you searched trees on this site, using Essex as a place of birth?

Try 192.com - there 97 K Smith's in the free results in Essex. If you think he may still be in the Essex area, it might be worth a carefully worded letter to each one.

There are a number of marriages in Essex using 1970 as a mid point, but other than the reference numbers to order from the GRO, and the name of the spouse, no other personal details are available for free.

At least you now have his name on the internet, which will show up if anyone more closely related does an internet search.
