Mark Report 23 Oct 2011 22:20

Hi All,

Have been trying to find out for a few years what happened to my Grandmother. She gave up my father at birth and we have had no contact since.

Details known to me:

1. Rebecca Lilian Presland, Born 11th July 1919, Camberwell North to Rebecca Presland (formally Lear, Maiden name Turbot) & James Presland.
2. Gave birth to Robert Presland in Westminster, on 5th August 1937. Father not named on birth cert.
3. Married Alfred Horace Jones on 7th June 1941 in Islington. Divorced.
4. Married Harry Samuel Scotchford on 24th March 1951 in Paddington.
5. Was working as a Hotel cook at the time.
6. Lived at 22a Craven Hill Gardens W2 at that time
7. Attended Battersea College between 1955-56. Studied Nutrition.

That is the last details that I can find. I have not found any records for any children from either marriage. In both cases the husbands were a lot older than her - 20+ years.
I believe her second husband died on 29th March 1967. His brother signed the death cert.

I have not been able to find a death cert so she could possibly still be alive?? Even if not, perhaps where she could be buried.

Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks you.
Mark

Have you tried tracing any of Harry's family? It's a fairly unusual name. They might know something perhaps?

If you know where Harry lived, you could look at old electoral rolls to see if she was still with him.

Does the death cert. list his marital status?

Hi Rose,

Where can you see the old Electoral roles from that period?
His address on the death cert is listed as 153 Lancaster Court, Fulham. There is no mention that he was married.

Mark

Hi Jan,

Scotchford does seem to be an unusual name. That has helped me build most of Harry's family.
Harry had 9 siblings. Unfortuantly most died very young:

Edward Frederic, 1886 - 1888
James Howie, 1888 - 1945,
Thomas Alfred, 1889 - 1916,
David Tait, 1891 - 1892,
William George, 1893 - ??
Naomi Emily Alice, 1894 - 1896,
Charles Hudson, 1896 - ??
Victor, 1900 - 1966,
Edward Robert, 1902 - ??

Still have a few blanks to fill in.

Cheers,
MArk

Mark, electoral registers can be viewed at the nearst main library to the address. If you live a long way from there you can ask for a lookup - there might be a charge. Might be worth seeing if anyone is registered on Friends Reunited as living there.
Do you have any idea if his brother was married and had children? This is the line I would pursue to see if relatives have any knowledge.

Hi Jan,

I live in Ireland, so not easy for me to view any records locally. Will look into it with some of my relatives that live close to London.

I can find a record for a Robert Edward who married a Lily Ford in 1926 in Hammersmith. They had two children that both died as infants.

There is another marriage in 1935. Have not found any children from that marriage.

Can't say for sure if either are for my Robert Edward Scotchford.

Cheers.

Hi Kay,

It's a possibility that she died abroad. She may even still be alive abroad???

I've checked all the Scotchford records in Scotland. There are only a few and they all relate to the births and deaths of the early Scotchford siblings before they relocated to London. Harry was the first to be born outside of Scotland. The older children were all born in Kilmarnock.
