Hi All

I wonder if someone could help or advise? I am trying to find out about my birth mother Mary Jones. I was born on 11.03.1945 at the Hoo, Great Gaddesden near Hemel Hempstead; which i understand was a maternity hospital during the second world war. I understand that for a time while she was pregnant, she lived in a mother and baby home called Ardmore in Buckhurst Hill, Essex. On my adoption certificate all that is recorded is her full name Mary Jones and her profession was a capstan operator. I have approached the adoption agency many years ago and due to there being so many Mary Jones' they were unable to find any information. The last known address is in Whippendale Road in Watford between 1945/46. I know this as this was on a letter that she wrote to agree to my adoption. Hoping someone can advise or help so that i can start researching my family tree...

Kind thanks

Wendy

Hve you tried looking to see who else was living at that address? Electoral register will give you adults over 21. Worth a try.
Remember no ER during the war years, but 1946 onwards should be OK.
These records are not online - they are usually kept at the nearest main library to the address. You have to go in person or ask staff for a lookup - they may charge.

Quick note - I can't see a Whippendale Rd. on Googlemap, though of course it might have been there at the time. There is Whippendelll Rd. Watford however?

Just a thought - when did you last try the adoption agency? I ask because I think access rules changed a while back. I am wondering if you have every scrap of info from your adoption records? I have no personal knowledge of this though, so might be talking rubbish!
