........when looking for living relatives, and possible contacts on this site.

Put in the names and dates you KNOW, and check the results.

If any look likely, contact the tree owner, by clicking on 'find out more'

"I think it's time GR put it in the initial guidance rather than rely on other members to tell people.

It needs to be made much clearer at the outset...preferably when people join GR...

ie

"First step: Search trees" "

Sad to say, I don't think that any new - or not-so-new - members bother to read the guidelines.......

Probably not, but that's no excuse for GR not putting it there, it is after all one of the main 'selling points' of the site.
:-D

I thought putting "living relatives" in trees was forwned upon ?

Not that it seems to stop people doing so :-)

Of course it is.......without permission.

If permission is given by the individual, his/her details can be added.

BUT..............the search for living relatives usually (not always, before someone starts nit-picking) involves asking for info about descendants of known ancestors.............THOSE are the details which should be used as search tools!

I have no idea..........

There are frequently threads popping up on the boards where long standing members are trying to be helpful to new folk - I had one going myself a couple of years ago.

The problem is, as has been pointed out, new members rarely seem to read any guidelines whatsoever and yes, it would be helpful if looking in Search Trees was included.

I get so many responses back to my daily messaging where members thank me and then state that they hadn't a clue how things worked.

I am far too polite to respond......".Well, why didn't you read the guidelines before you started?" - even though I may think it!

It would be helpful if those who do look ups etc. could also suggest, where applicable, that the names being researched should be popped into the Search Trees box for possible connections on this site.
