Hi everyone, I started back to work today, was worn out and slept on sofa when I got home. My uncle phoned to say the SS didn't go to see my aunt today as expected. My sister went to see her and other uncle and aunt. We all think she is getting stronger and not as confused but still want her to go into a nursing home. This aunt has no cooker, central heating, washing machine, fridge, freezer, micro wave all the things most take for granted, Lou has never wanted them!!! Her toilet is at the end of her yard as she can no longer get upstairs, there is no lighting out there. Lou empties her comode walking holding onto her washing line! How we want better for her, and to start the proces of getting a nice place for her. No wonder she has money in the bank, she has never spent any! But at £2000 a month it will soon eat away her savings.
Anyone doing anything nice New Years Eve?

Gail, what fun, it will be lovely when finished by the sound of it and the colours sound pretty.
Barbra, I hope you don't have too many bruises tomorrow, no doubt it was your dignity thatw as most hurt!
Carole, we have our daughter and our son in law coming for New Year, we used to have the 3 boys as well but they all lead their own lives now.

Carole your aunts house sounds like ours when we moved in. Nothing modern at all, all the electrical wiring had to be re done, power points had to be put in as there were only 4 in the house. Kitchen had one cupboard and a sink with only cold water. We did get some second hand cupboards and it was really bad until about 5 years ago when we had the kitchen and bathroom done up. I do not think much had been done to the house for 60 or so years. The old electrical work was still the fabric covered cords and a couple of very old brass light switches, with pipes running down the walls to hide the electrical cords. The kitchen roof also leaked for 6 years until we could afford a new roof for that part of the house. We did have an electric stove when we moved in, but it continually gave electric shocks if you touched it, so we had to buy a new one fairly quickly.
Eventually we had to replace all the windows as well. The house is now well sealed and insulated and modernised. We had to be careful as the house is 130 years old and has timber ceilings and lovely skirting boards, so even though it is modernised we have kept as many old features as possible. Most of the paint colours we found under the old paint work, we matched them as closely as possible and used them throughout the house. The kitchen is made of blackwood, and have granite benchtops it does not look too modern, even though it is. We have been very careful and only done a bit at a time when we had the money.
We had to go and buy some more paint today, 60 klms away, as our local shop had run out of the paint we needed and it would be 2 weeks before they had another delivery. So we went searching for carpet, blinds and curtains. The 3 carpet shops were closed for holidays, we did order the blinds, will take 4 weeks as the factory is closed for holidays. The curtain shop did not want to help me out, and basically ignored me so I walked out. I will take my business elsewhere.
Today is basically rest day now, back to painting tomorrow.

Gail, it will look lovely when you have done. You must be very proud of the way you have looked after and improved the house. Don't forget to take some before and after photos.
Barbara, hope your rear end isn't too sore, my bruise took ages to come out but is starting to fade now. It matched my name for a while lol Take care everyone who is battling snow and ice conditions.
Carole, hope your Aunt can be persuaded to go into a home or at least sheltered housing, would that be a gentler step for her to take, it would be good to know she is in a warm small place with a warden on hand.
love to everyone reading, where is Deanna, is she still sleeping off her Christmas dinner?

We live in a council house (how common!). It was built between the wars and we have the most beautiful doors with bakelite handles, the ones with a square top panel and three vertical panels beneath.
The grain on the doors is gorgeous and when I came to strip and sand the floors they also were made of beautiful wood. We still have picture rails too.
Does anybody else have a picture rail in the bathroom?

I didn't think they put picture rails in the bathroom. I bet your house is pretty solid too Sharron!
Gail you will get there eventually, isn't it always a nuisance when places close for 2 weeks over Christmas (not for the workers it isn't though!)
Deanna, hope you are OK, it seems ages since you posted.

Good morning all, I've not been on much lately as you know I have had a lot on my mind. I wanted to wish all my Genes family, I was going to say that before Gails post, a very Happy New Year and hope that it is a better year than this one has been for us all.
I went through hell the last six months with pain and worry and thanks to you all I got through it. It is very comforting to know that people are there for you, even me when I didn't post much. This thread has been such a much needed place to come to, thanks Carole for starting it. The day my guardian angel arrived in the shape of a locket, I nearly broke down, thinking of you all thinking of me when it was so close to Christmas. Then the other heart and crystal one arrived, what can I say, I recieved the list of contributers yesterday from Joyce so I will be thanking each of you by pm when I can. Well, my twins are calling in to see me over the next couple of days,(granddaughters) so I better get cracking. They want a trifle and I want a mandarin and fresh cream microwave cake for myself, a special treat.
Hope the snow stays away, we still have the lot from before Christmas, mind you it makes the kitchen look bright when the sun reflects on it. The hills are still covered over the valley only broken up by the lines of the drystone walls, it does look nice when sun is out.
love and hugs to all.

Travellers superstition is to not do any washing on New Years Day as it will wash away one of your family.
I only have One Hand and Wheels now and I need the pension money so I had better not do any!
Happy New Year to everybody.

Morning all . . .
Looks like we are in for a snow storm today, the sky is very heavy and dull grey. Not the best day but C has gone to pick miniMary up, she's had a wonderful break, learned to make pizza, baked cookies, been to art gallery, museum & science centre, had her hair straightened by a hairdresser, gained a bit of self-confidence. I cannot believe she is almost 13 already, on the other hand I can't believe my own age either.LOL
I've learned a new saying which I really like,if I may share it with all of you. When you're lonely, I wish you Love! When you're down, I wish you Joy! When you're troubled, I wish you Peace! When things seem empty, I wish you Hope! Have a Happy New Year!
Love and a group hug, Mary

Afternoon all,
First of all let me wish you all a very happy, healthy New Year, may it bring peace of mind to those that desperately need it.
Ann, Caz, Liz & Carole, thank you all once again for your kind words. I am still tossing up weather to renew my sub. for GR...most probably not.I rarely post or use the site anymore. Just look in occasionally.
Mary, thank you for the invite to be a''friend' on Facebook, have tried to log on, but something keeps going wrong. Will have to grab the coat tails of daughter next time she comes in like a whirlwind, and ask her to show me PROPERLY.Lol. Why is it that those who know certain things are quite bad at explaining, they automatically think you should understand like they do. Lol.
It's like WW3 outside, has been since first light this morning, even though you are only allowed to set off fireworks from 10 am (31st dec.) until 2 am jan 1st.It amazes me every year again, to see how many thous. of euros people spend on them. The worst are the so-called 'bombs', they are very popular. You would have to experience the terrific noise they make to understand. It must make those poor folk who have fled war-torn countries think they have landed back in Hell.Towards midnight. My daughter akes if I would come there to have a drink later on, but I said I would do so,IF I can pluck up the courage to go out.The rotters love throwing fireworks at people.
Christmas was fine this year, I went up to Amsterdam to celebrate it with two daughters and their kiddies.Boxing Day they had a lot of Russian friends over.My ex. only turned up on Boxing Day, so didn't stay over like me, but he asked me to travel back with him late that evening. Both daughters wanted me to stay for another night, but, my ex. said he didn't feel too good, so would I......I'm a sucker for such stories....lol
Once again, let me wish you all a lovely evening, and all the best for the New Year.

Good evening to all you lovely folk............
Did I have any choice in posting today! No I did not, you have all been on my mind most of the day due to the closure of what to most of us has been a traumatic year..... some people come into our lives and quickly go. Others stay awhile, make footprints on our hearts and we are never, ever the same. I have input to and read the postings of this magical thread for many years, have cried and laughed with each and every one of you, hopefully amused you with my tales of a lovable pup and have been allowed to creep into the hearts of a few of you.......Today I pray that the coming new year will bring new courage, determination, commitment and heart to follow through your dreams and hopes....tomorrow is the start of a new day...
A toast to you all and a very happy new year......
Love.............Joyce xxxxxxxx

Riight I have decided to get off my backside tonight, little man in respite and take myself off to a new years eve party with my lovely hubby and little girl. I have been making excuses all day about why I don't want to go but have to break this way of living, there has to be more to life and I suppose what I am saying is if I don't go out and experience it then it is'nt going to come to me. New beginnings and happy times are what I wish for us all. Lots of Love Claire xx
