Hi all

I have a question regarding ancestors who wed away from their home parishes?

If a couple decided to wed away from their home parish, if one of them set up a temporary residence in the parish and the other spouse stayed at their usual residence, come the wedding day itself when the one who stayed at the usual parish travelled to the church to marry, if they travelled some distance wouldn't it be customary for them to stay in the parish for a couple of days before heading back to the usual residence one marrying?

I think Victorian weddings took place before noon. It would seem odd for the spouse to travel say 40 miles to marry then return to their home parish the same day after the wedding ceremony. The one who travelled would have to spend a night of two in the parish of marrying wouldn't they?

40 miles in Victorian times was quite a way and must have taken a few hours on a train or cart. If the wedding happened in the morning and one spouse had to travel a distance to get wed wouldn't it make more sense to arrive at the parish the day before?

What year are you talking about Ben, it would have taken longer if it was horse drawn transport. I would not have though they would ahve been able to get married then travel 40+ miles.

Hi Ann

1858. Say if a groom and bride came from Essex, one of the spouses set up temporary residence in London so they could wed at their chosen London church and the other travelled to London to marry, wouldn't it make sense for the one travelling up to actually stay a night or two in London?

George Ferguson and Caroline Quilter both usually lived in Leigh, Essex but they wed in London. George set up a temporary residence in St George In The East, the church they wed at. Caroline said on the cert that she was of Leigh, Essex. They wed on 15 Sep 1858 at St George In The East. I would have thought that she stayed in London for a short while either side of the wedding perhaps the night before then the night afterwards at the grooms temporary address.

They both did return to Leigh on Sea as George died there in 1860 and Caroline is on the 1861 census at Leigh a widow living back with her parents Nathan and Elizabeth Quilter.

Goodness they had a short married life, how sad. Yes I reckon they would have stayed in London for a day or so before travelling to Essex. Why do you need to know? They obviously moved in the end if George died in
Leigh.

Hi Ann

I was just curious as I get excited when I find a direct ancestor with a London connection.

I think they chose that church to marry even though they lived in Leigh usually but I think she stayed in London for a day or two at the time of the wedding.

Hi all, busy times for lots of you and I am not much help to anyone at the mo, am so busy trying to sort out this holiday accom. for us, three weeks today we should be going away and so far I can't find the right place to stay. The original one in Norfolk is now let for the first week so I can't fall back on that, and my head is spinning looking through so many blasted holiday sites. O.h. is very fussy about where he stays and how far it is etc but have some more for him to look at when he gets up and hopefully can book one of those. He has just booked to go to his son's for the Sat pm and Sunday of the weekend before, so no idea when he thinks he will get things ready or sorted out as he is on late shift that week too. Everything has to fit in with his son, never mind he keeps postponing the visit when O.h. sorts out dates. I have waited all summer for him to go away for the night and he has to choose that weekend! I know it will be the same as always, me having to do all the sorting, packing and loading the car and unloading the other end cos he will be too tired, after driving! So much for being my toyboy, he hasn't got the stamina of a peanut! The only good thing will be that we have seperate rooms and I will not be cooking much, I have told him I want to eat out most days, otherwise it is no holiday for me. It will be nice to go somewhere we haven't been before, looking at Broadstairs, Eastbourne or Whitstable, so not too far to drive, under 200 miles and found some nice properties to rent where there are beaches and shops and restaurants in easy reach I hope without having to drive much, so I can have a drink out and not worry about the driving home in the dark.

Carole, G. is at Reading now, he went on Weds till Monday and he texted me yesterday saying the weather wasn't too bad and he was having a great time so I am pleased for him. He needed a break and he is with lots of his mates, at least 8 of them I think so should have fun.

take care everyone, and apologies if I am owing emails etc, spending too much time house seeking so when that is booked I can catch up with myself a bit I hope.
enjoy the bank holiday weekend,

love
Lizxxxx

What are we doing on page six?

Just popped in to tell you all I am back at work today after my six weeks off. Not looking forward to it. Still not eating full meals and so feeling empty. But I just can't eat a lot. Going to have two weetabix before I go, to start the day.

Have a good day xx

Hope the first day back has gone ok. Carole, at least it's a short week for you.
If you can't eat, how about getting some of those milkshake type drinks, like Build up? I used to use them when I was in a rush and no time for lunch, I loved the Vanilla powder that you make into a milkshake, I suppose they still do them as they were for people who were poorly to give them nourishment and vitamins etc. There's Complan too, that's good and there are savoury flavours as well I think.

We don't want you fading away before you go on holiday, and you won't have a lot of resistance to bugs and illness if you aren't eating well.

take care

Carole Report 1 Sep 2009 17:24

Thanks Liz. I had two weetabix and a coffee for breakfast. Once at work I was hungry before tea break. Had two bananas, and a milkyway, & coffee. Lunch I ate both the cheese sandwiches I had taken, and a muller fruit corner, and a biscuit with my coffee. So didn't do too bad. One more day and I'm off till Monday. I felt better once at work than I had expected, so pleased with my first day. I'm driving tomorrow. Very trusting lot!!!

Flippin heck Carole, there's me thinking you were fading away cos you said you aren't eating much lol If you add up all those calories they are probably as much as a full meal or two lol

You gave me a clue to your problems with that list, too much coffee!!! It's a diuretic so if you swapped the morning one for fruit juice or tea you might feel better, also have fruit juice with meals instead of tea or coffee increases the level of iron you absorb from the food.
Very glad the day went better than expected and tomorrow, you're in charge! Enjoy the feeling!

HI Gail I wondered where you were. Sorry to hear you are feeling ill. Is it swine flu?

I really feel knackered this morning!! Yesterday has caught up. But only today then cbt tomorrow then I can take it easy.

Liz I have decafe coffee in the home, only have two coffees all day at work. Cup of tea in the evening. I don't think thats too much. But I hear what you are saying about fruit juice helping.
I would be interested to know how many coffees and teas others drink? Anyone want to tell?

Aching tired Tinkerbell xx

You know how your tea-pot gets inside sometimes?Well,I think that may be what my ailimentary canal must look like with the quantity of tea that goes through it.Rarely drink coffee but I LOVE tea.Loose leaf,in the tea-pot(warmed first).
Tend to not drink tea out much because I don't like tea-bags,what a snob eh!I'm really not surprised at the decline in tea drinking with the invention of the tea-bag.It is not the same at all.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 2 Sep 2009 09:54

Carol, I have a cup of ordinary (T bag sorry Sharron) tea first thing, brought to me in bed. With breakfast I have a cup of peppermint tea. Mid morning ordinary coffee (instant but decaff upsets my stomach), lunch time occasionally a cup of tea but not always as sometimes I have a cup a soup, afternoon a cup of peppermint tea. And that is it, other drinks, a glass of something alcoholic, sometimes 2 early evening, otherwise water.

Do not know if swine flu or not, they stopped testing for it ages ago. It has been a very nasty flu though, so would not be surprised if it was that dreaded bug. First time I have had the flu and had symptoms of food poisoning as well, wont go into detail. Have also lost my voice from sore throat.

I also have a boil on the sitting bit of the body, so do not sit much.

Sydneybloke Report 2 Sep 2009 12:32

Oh Gail, so sorry you're not feeling well. It sounds more like the common or garden variety of flu, not the swine type. And a boil on the bum to boot. Not nice at all.
Carole, so glad you're back at work. I think you should expect to be very tired sfter work. I was.
Purple Sparkly, I feel for you, trying to organise a holiday when teh OH is so fussy. You cannot say too much to him, but I do feel for you.
Sharron, don't know whether we have spoken. Like you, I enjoy a cup of real tea made in a pot. Weekends only, I'm afraid. We find teabags acceptable when we make them, but when we are out they can be very ordinary. Probab;y because the water is not properly boiling?
Deanna, glad the wediing went well. Even to get there would have been an achievement for you, from what you've said before. Screen jumping about again. Bother. Regards to all, Colin.

Bad Mummy that I am cranked the volume up on the music so we had full belt Smashing Pumpkins all the way to the airport. Fortunately he had calmed down by the time we got Joyce, dropped her off at her friends safe and sound.
Glad to hear yesterday went well at work yesterday Carole.x
