In Service to Royalty

I was lead to understand that some ancestors - not sure what dates - were in service to "royalty". Whether it's the King or Queen or just some old duke I don't know. Nor do I know exactly which members of the family this related to. Has anyone got any idea how I might find out with so little information? I'm guessing that the Royal Household doesn't make such records public!

Any input much appreciated.
