On my great grandmother/grandfather's marriage certificate dated 1858 the age is give as 'of age'. Can anyone tell me from what age this covers? |

Hi Hilary I understand from my local Register office that the couple could just declare that they were "of official age" and did not have to produce any evidence of birth, and as long as the person conducting the ceremony went along with this they were married. I'm unsure of what "official age" was supposed to be at that time - but I'm sure someone on the site will know! Regards Jane |
