Thanks Vera- I didn't see the original - must have been hunting Agnes- or was it the Vicar's petticoat. Will try to remember to add it correctly in future. Rosi. Colchester ESS. PS. It's not County first then?

Thanks Brian - yes Antivirus and firewall were already installed - but someone opened a file purporting to come from Microsoft with an update. The Virus checker detected it but could not stop it before it disabled IE and Outlook Express. All seems to be ok now tho - for the expenditure of £50 and a PC expert. Have just attempted to reload PAF and having got someway through it tells me that I should not have any windows running during installation - so I have to go back to square one and start again. What a duff head I am - I'm sure most people know that! (No - not that I'm a duff head- I try, unsuccessfully, to conceal that most of the time). Thanks for your concern anyway! Rosi

Rosi If you are having virus problems (or even if you aren't) then for goodness sake install anti-virus protection. Even the full Internet Security package including a firewall from Norton is only around £30 or £40 for a year. Invaluable for peace of mind.

Thanks Jim and Vera. I think I have downloaded the PAF already- but it remains pristine as I was so reluctant to start fromthe beginning again. And then the bugbear worm got me - so I might have to download it again. But if I can run the two, GC and PAF, in tandem but separately, I think that should sort it for me. Shouldn't it? Was very thankful that I had got my tree on GC when bugbear struck - at least that protected it from being bugbeared about with! Thanks for advice and help. Rosi, Colchester. PS. How do I write Colchester Essex in proper Genealogicalese?

Rosi I don't think you can copy your tree info from GC to a Gedcom thingy because this site isn't a family tree software program as such. By all means download the PAL from the LDS site but than you will have to start from scratch and grow your tree again onto the PAL one. Hope you don't have too many names for that little job. I sound like an expert, I'm not, but I do know (WOW) that you need your very own family tree software program on your PC and not to rely on the tree on GC alone. Either use the PAL (Personal Ancestral File) or one that you buy then you can print out all sorts of reports, charts and info. Good luck. Vera Manchester LAN

Hi Rosi, I have PAF & find it is an excellent tool. Yesterday I used it to print out a list of the 1200+ individuals I have on it (21 pages). Then I could go through my names on GC to identify the ones I haven't entered yet. The trouble was I entered direct ancestors first, then their children. The ones I am missing are the siblings descendants and those still living, but navigating the tree is not the easiest of pastimes. With PAF you can print a descendancy chart of any ancestor, Or a pedigree of any individual, or your whole ancestry in book form. Jim

Aha! Thanks Jim! It was beyond me to work out how it could happen. I am thinking of starting the task of copying my GC names into a Gedcom thingy - and running the two separately - is this what you do? I hate the thought of deleting all my hard won GC tree, baby as it is in comparison with some, and starting from scratch. But I do like the idea of being able to print it and bits of it from time to time which I gather from these boards is possible with the PAF from LDS? Rosi.

Hi Rosi. Those of us who do it the hard way have to enter everything. The technocrats among us who upload from a Gedcom File will find that the dates don't come across. I personally think they will have a harder job inserting all these details than if they had done it longhand in the first place. Oh the joys of 21st century electronics! Jim, Gosport, HAM.

Rosi Report 19 Jun 2003 11:14

How is it possible to put an entry into a tree without putting an area and date? When putting in a name it's mandatory to enter these details - but many of the 'new names' in my 'Name Summary' don't show this very basic info. Time and Place are of the essence when looking for someone! Rosi. Colchester.
