Yes, Sue's right. It was Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs. They reached No 11 in the charts in 1965. I well remember reaching out and looking in my "Guinness Book of British Hit Singles" and reading the answer---it seems like only moments ago. Jim, Gosport, HAM.

Surely 'Woolly Bully' was by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs. My God, really showing my age now! Sue at Langley vale Epsom Downs (home of the Derby) SRY (I think. Vera correct me if I'm wrong please)

And Heather...I've never heard of the Purple Helmets...but their name certainly conjures up some lurid thoughts...

Colin

Heather...that's interesting. I must admit, I've been trying to buy this number for about thirty years and most record shops don't seem to know anything about it. Nor can I obtain the Travelling Wilberries' "Well it's all right" (George Harrison's group...poor old George)

Heather...I think you are getting warm with the Samudio name...but not quite there... Colin.

Colin

Rosalind..what's this "yuck" business? Heather: I like your interpretation of a wooly bully (and you've probably spelt it correctly) and I can't think of a better definition. Colin.

Vera...just got back from the Tavern. Perhaps I should give you a little more time to dwell on it. I believe the number would have been released about the late sixties and I'll give you a clue: the same band had a hit with "Wooly Bully"...at least, I think so. Had a very nice meal at the Tavern. Colin Are you talking to yourself - or can anybody join in?? I give up - just who did write that awful song? Vera Manchester, LAN, ENG, UK (How's that for Chapman Codes?)

The fact is, Ian, there are lots of Oldfields in your part of the world...and you don't need a Web Site to access them...you just walk through the gate.

Oh, incidentally, the word the singer was unable to spell was something akin to that which one might politely describe as "breaking wind"...I think you can guess... Colin Abbott.

I suppose I'd better be honest and say that I quite enjoyed parts of Tubular Bells (Mike Oldfield). But, on the subject of pop music from way back...a little test for you all... who recorded "I'd have wrote you a letter but I couldn't spell #!*^~`<@**" ? Colin Abbott Western Australia

Ian Oldfield asks why there are never any Oldfields in TV or Film credits. Well, Ian, it's because your rellies preferred to make one hell of a racket with something called Tubular Bells. Colin Abbott Western Australia.
