You soon realise which sites are slow and not because of your connection to the ISP. A proportion of sites are no faster than on dial-up. But the majority are great with an almost immediate response. MB

I am another NOB-er...I think I can get it,,,but what I dont understand is all this puuting in of new sockets and stuff, I already have a seperate line for my current internet connection, Any ideas on what would happen if I changed,? love Claire x

If you changed to broadband, everything becomes more or less instrant - no waiting for pages with lots of graphic images to download etc - quite magic. Sadly for us NOBers we get to see the hourglass as a permanent feature on our screens. Graham

Clare It is so much quicker we've only had it fortnight and the cable goes through our loft ,hubby gave the man from Ntl a hand, and there is a little siler box which sits on top of the desk, the worst thing was installing the disc which with help from my son and the young man on the helpline we managed in the end as we are not very pc literate as Graham (previous message ) has found out Ann,Darlington

I'm not on Broadband either, still using Freeserve, with BT Together and Surftime. Gives me free internet at off-peak times, which is probably a good thing. If I had free internet access at all times, you'd never get me off this site!!

With BT Broadband / ADSL there is no new sockets etc. You put a plug in filter in your telephone socket - this has two sockets one for telephone one for modem / router Plug the modem / router into the socket afetr configuring it. Plug the modem / router Ethernet connection into the Ethernet connection on the PC and you are connected to the Internet. My modem / router has four sockets on the back so I can connect to four PC or more through an Ethernet hub. I just leave my EMail program running all the time I am in the house. Avoid the connections that go to the PC's USB socket. It is worth getting an Ethernet connection on the PC. MB

I'm not on Broadband. BT Surftime. I dont get cut off now for 4 hrs. used to be 2 hrs. Pretty fast connection on dial up. Am going for anytime soon as Tiring surfing at night. I get connected 99.9% of the time. No complaints.

In this remote part of South Shropshire we have no gas either, nor can our telephone exchange facilitate ISDN - so another option closed off. Naturally there's NO cable, nor because of the proximity of HUGE (but wonderful) trees can we receive satelite/digital TV. On the plus side, we have 8 trains each day (4 up and 4 down) - a regular bus service, and because we live right on the borders of 3 counties we belong to 3 county libraries. So I should be grateful for small mercies. Graham

Hi Graham, I definately wouldn't have it-too easy for hackers to hack in apparently. Anyway, I'm not going anywhere and it's not that slow for a NOBer
