Same problem. I have 9 different spellings of my surname in 12 generations. One of my "Heron" families is entered in the records as "Hearon", another as "Herring" One family of my "Whitby"s is "Widby" The difficulty is that I have always used the convention of entering an individual as per the first record, ie Birth Certificate or PR birth entry. What authority have we to unilaterally change names to suit our convenience? Jim

On the basis the spellings can vary quite a lot on the old census etc, would it be possible to have a phonetic search on names? I have gone from Fuery to Furay to Furey to Fury and now to Furry - so what name should I enter them under? How will people know if my family connects up with theirs if I enter mine under Furay and they are searching for Furey?? Just in case you were wondering - I have entered them all under the one spelling of Furay! Please advise GC - or does the search do this anyway?
