Well said Sue! I have to add that I have had nothing but support (and fun) from the members board. My tree is quite bare, but the greenery is there and spreading not least without helpful comments from my friends on the members board. Hey! Why don't you join in? We'll try not to bite.... Di Sydney

Well said Sue, I couldn't have put it any better myself! David, all I have to say to you is, treat these people as your friends. They have helped me a lot in the past few months on the genesconnected boards, and will do the same for you. Maggy, West Yorkshire

David I think the point has been fully put across in the other replies, but one assumption on your part that hasn't been commented on is your statement that we have obviously found who we are looking for. I for one have not. I began contributing to the members board a couple of weeks ago, have joined in most days and have had an amazing amount of help from the others. On the strength of their encouragement I sent of for my first certificates at the end of last week. It was only by hearing their stories - as many negative brickwalls as successes I assure you - that I took the bull by the horns and ordered. My certificates arrived today and have helped me remove a few bricks. I am highly indebted to the members board, however trivial some of our comments may be, because hidden in amongst them are some real gems of wisdom and encouragement. Sometimes we may feel a little silly (we don't all know our way around all the websites, parish records etc) asking a question to which we feel everyone would expect us to know the answer, and it's less embarrassing to ask on the members board than to post the query on what we may feel is the board for more a more seriously worded question. I would add that I have had a filing cabinet full of folders of names, dates, possibles and so on for all my different branches for nearly 2 years, but it is only since sharing thoughts on the members board that I have ploughed through several folders and am now beginning to see the wood through the trees. I mean no disrespect in this message, but please do not prejudge or make assumptions, and if you take the time to look you will see that many of us have added helpful suggestions to many of the questions on the tips board and guest book. At least we receive immediate positive feedback on the members board. I have noticed that a few people asking for help on the tips and guests do not have the courtesy to say thank you to those who have given them the information they were looking for. I rest my case. Sue

I havn`t done any research away from my pc yet. but I have managed so far with a lot of phone calls and a lot of help from very kind people on this site. I have found a lot of info from the net, I know soon I will have to venture out into the big wide world but at the moment with a 41/2 year old at home its very hard, so hopefuly when he starts school in september I will be out and about searching here there and everywhere. mind you I have probably got to go out to work then. David I am very sorry about my earlier message I hope I havn`t caused any offence, you sound a really nice bloke. good luck in your research. Debbie

Thank you for your replies & to those of you that have offered encouragement. Pauline's comments about renaming the boards sounds very sensible to me. As a new member I have obviously become confused by the titles. good luck to you all Dave ps: Yes Marlis I do leave my PC for research.

Sorry David As a new member you will not be aware that the Members Board was set up, BY REQUEST, so that the Members could chat and NOT CLOG UP the other boards with non- genealogy. That was the original idea, but as you will see from the Tips and Guest boards, it hasn't quite worked out like that! Your best bet will be to check out the TRYING TO FIND BOARD, the TIPS BOARD and the GUEST BOOK for help with your research and, when you feel inclined, join in the chat on the Members Board. It has now become quite international and is good to read when you have had enough of banging your head against that inevitable brick wall. There are some interesting characters, too. Good luck with your research and welcome to GC. Vera, Manchester LAN

David, The Members Board is for communicating. If you're looking for help, use the Tips Board. By the way, you need not be a paid up member to contribute to or read the Members Board. Crista

David I think you only have to pay to contact other members. they bought the members board on a couple of months ago to talk about absolutely anything we want, so when you are hitting a brick wall it is nice to go and have a little break. if you look at the top of each board you will see what each board is meant for. so please get your facts straight before you add somthing here. because I think this sort of message might upset a few people. Having paid money to access the members board I have found it very little use to my searches as it is used as a chatroom. Can I suggest that the members engaged in this activity use MSN Messenger or similar chat utility & allow the board to be used for it's intended purpose. You are lucky in that you have obviously found who you were looking for. Please have some consideration for us members who are still desperately searching.
