A few weeks back someone suggested going thro your names on Friends Reunited for genealogical leads. 10 days or so ago I did and fired off three letters, one to someone with my paternal surname, one to someone with my Great Aunts married name and one with the same name , given and surname, as my college friend, tho obviously younger. What exciting results in 2 cases. The paternal surname replied immediately, was my first cousin whom I scarcely knew as her dad had cut himself off from the family, and whom I last saw during the 40's. So I am now in touch with her and her sister. Then today I received an answer from the lady with my Great Aunt Nell's surname, and Aunt Nell was her grandmother and so she is my second cousin. Another case of cutting oneself from family, my Mum this time, so that Aunt Nell and her husband and one daughter still at home were the only people I knew of Mum's large family. Now I have news of another great uncle, and 5 more second cousins I never knew, of great Aunt Nell's 4 sons' now deceased that I met briefly as a child, and several third cousins. Liz, my second cousin is off on holiday soon but when she gets back we shall exchange information. All the info I had to get started basically came from her aunt, with whom I lived for a while, so she may also have talked to Liz too about family. It's been such a thrill to hear all of this news. Makes all the weeks of banging the head on the brick wall worthwhile. So thankyou whoever you are that put that message on the board. A truly great tip, and I recommend it to everyone. Now I just need to hear from my friend!! Di.
