How difficult will it be for future genealogists, to do research on families in coming years. Many people now Live together & dont marry. Have children out of wedlock. Join their surnames & their partners surnames to make double barreled names ! just a passing thought........ Elaine x

& possibly have several different partners, and several children with different fathers over their lifetime ! E x

maybe they have good reason to marry at least twice :-)

Sheila I do agree, In times gone past, many people had to stay put & make do, in relationships. At least there is a choice now ! E x

Things weren't so different in times gone by, my ancestors certainly moved around, from Cornwall, Somerset, Cumberland to County Durham then some out to America. At least the young and not so young have a choice of whether to stay in a marriage that has failed, my mum had no where to go and was told by her family, you made your bed you lie in it. No one would take her in with 3 children so she had to endure the beatings.

From my point of view the big difference will be that children will no longer be named after their fathers or grandfathers, thus giving us a clue!

You are right Trish, its just history repeating itself but today we have modern technological science dont forget that.

And didn't I hear recently about a Brighton woman who had to go to Manchester to have her baby as there wasn't a suitably equipped Hospital available locally? The mind boggles!! Jim

I noticed on the 2001 census that there was a section for your religion. It was then reported in the press that (I think) the 3rd most common religion was Jedi Knight. That could make future rellies scratch their heads. Maggie

Hi Jim, Yeah, poor girl had to go to Manchester to have baby. Reason being, baby needed a special baby bed [incubater type, but for intensive care - all of Brighton's were in use, and so were those in the surrounding districts, including London. Manchester was the nearest!! This is now hype, my daughter is a midwife, and had the misfortune to answer the call for help from Brighton, and have to tell them that all of Worthing's were in use. Crazy world. And the powers that be are very seriously talking in terms of downgrading the maternity units in this neck of the woods on the grounds that the specialist beds & doctors aren't really necessary!! Margaret I am a Jedi Knight if I remember rightly~obviously I was not into genealogy at the tim or I would never of put anything to confuse my descendents lol Also I never married and my eldest son had his fathers surname- which he has since changed back to my surname, so when my second son was born I decided against the hassle and decided against his father's name. Ah well we are all doing our bit by having a tree to pass down that hope fully our grandkids etc will add to over time~~~a modern day bible (well us Jedi Knights have no book of worship lol)

That was a thing I was thinking of, my brother has a little girl even though he see's her every week and has full contact with her she has her mothers surname and as they are not together anymore she lives with her mother I don't even know if his name is on the birth cert so even though now she is a big part of our lives maybe in future years people may look back and not put the two together.
