Hi Emma, Thanks again. Yes I now have 1881 census, but as yet have not had time to delve deeply. From what I have seen, I reckon you are right in concluding William is Dorcas's brother. Just wish she wouldn't keep changing her age! Just having a quick look before joining wife in lounge. May have more time tomorrow to check thru GC. I am so grateful to all those who have helped in this hunt. Regards Badger Bill Worthing

Hi Jude Gr.grdad married a Dorcas Horscroft. Thought I had her death record from GRO as 1920, but had my cheque returned by Registrar - they say no, and they say they have checked with adjoining registration districts. That's service for you! Must have misread some one else. Have to totally redo that search. If you can find anything at all, such as you previous, will be most grateful. Regards Badger Bill Worthing

Hi Bill Had a look on 1837 online and found the following: Marriage: 1869 Apr/May/June Qtr. Tom Stringer Deakin - Poplar-Vol 1c-pge 990 and abit further down the page: same yr and Qtr- Tom Stringer Deakins - Poplar - vol 1c - pge 990. I went through the years 1848 and 1849 to try and find birth, but no Tom Stringer, loads of Thomas and Williams.Made note of some of those, if you want them ask and l'll send seperately. I had hoped the marriage would have given me the brides name - but nope.Have a few more credits spare if l can look again for you. Good luck Jude

Bill, Have you got the disc for 1881 - I've just looked on LDS 1881 census - if you skip on a couple of households you get William Horscroft, shepherd at Nr Friths, Chiddingley - Dorcas's brother? Emma.

Hi again Lucy, Just read list for Alfriston, they are all relatives. Aunts/Uncles, Grandad, gr.granma. Dorcas is a puzzle - her age changes each time I make a connection. First connection indicated she was born in 1836 [can find no GRO reference to birth] 1881 census indicates birth in 1835, but now 1901 would indicate birth as 1843! I am now signing off for the night - need to get home - have been minding granchildren. Will probably be off line til Monday evening, so to all you good people checking things out for me, no I am not ignoring you, every scrap of info is vital to me, but I will not be back on line as stated, til Monday evening, when this will be my first stop. Good night everyone, thank you Badger Bill Worthing

Hi Lucy Local girl then. Litlington is a very small hamlet, time has passed it by. But has a large garden centre! Very ancient. Where are you now? Badger Bill Worthing

Hi Lucy & Sue Yes, it is Litlington, East Sussex [just sussex in old records]. One t only. North of South Downs, inland from Eastbourne. Group of olde villages, Alfriston being main one, Litlington and Lullington being nearby. Hey, do you think I could get a job as travel agent. Badger Bill Worthing

Don't worry Sue - It's spelt both ways on the schedule - the part for place of birth is Litlington but on the district name it's spelt Littlington.
