Hi Robert My s i l lives in Paso Robles, fortunately on a ranch, but she was in town yesterday at 11.15 when it happened and was told by the store to leave the building. Unknown to her and hubby the building at the end of the block had collapsed killing 2 shop assistance. It was a very old building. She and her husband had gone their seperate ways to do some shopping, so you can imagine she felt very frightned when told to leave the store.Fortunately they met up quickly and went home. On the way some of the roads were damaged as well as buildings, and they found out what had happened on the news. They have animals at the ranch so were concerned for them, but all is ok(for them). Us Brits tend to spend a lot of time complaining about the weather, but we dont know how lucky we are. Keep safe

Lisa J in California Report 23 Dec 2003 19:40

Hi Robert and Louise. Thank you for asking about us. I haven't seen pictures of the area (too busy to watch the news right now) but I know buildings collapsed, and there were a few deaths. What can be even more frightening than the actual earthquake are the aftershocks. Our, in the San Francisco Bay Area, last big earthquake (in 1989) had over 3,000 aftershocks -- a lot you can't feel, but a lot you CAN feel. I always wonder just how much shaking the standing houses can take. And, for weeks after the quake, every time the house rattles, you sit there and cringe, wondering if this is the start of the "big one" -- only to realize it was a truck driving by. We live near San Francisco and didn't feel this quake; although we had a little one last week which just about everyone did feel. I know all Californians are thinking of the Paso Robles people right now. I also know, after experiencing the 1989 earthquake and the love and support that poured in, that people around the world are thinking of those in Paso Robles. Once again, thanks for thinking of us.
