Having read Dawn's reply, I took another look at Ancestry, and I see that if you subscribe, then you have access to the English Civil Registration Death Index 1993-2002. Now ........ if this is the index that has been used to provide the information on the webfamily site, the information is already available on ancestry, for which we would have to pay! Perhaps we should be applauding Fred for supplying the same information free?! Just a thought .........

Hey there everyone, I also went to this website after reading your mails and looked to see if my beloved Dad's details were listed -and they were. I too find this really upsetting and I am angry that someone has obtained and download such personal info. We as relatives have not given permission and I really dislike the fact that these are our loved ones and not a list of names for someone to purchase to then make a website from. I have also tried to email the site owner but to little avail. If anyone does hear back from him I know we would all like to hear the explanations as to the how's and why's.

Lets not get paranoid, as Crista said this is public information. It has my brother on who died two years back so I understand the upset but that's us being human, it's not the records fault. They have probably set up software to repeatedly search 1837 (or other) 1984-2001 till it gets matches. It could not do this with previous records as they only return pages of information. Bob

Hi Jude, You know, I was a bit concerned at first but I don't think it's such a big deal on second thoughts. It's more useful than anything. Would be a shame if it got removed. If you want the 100 year rule scrapped then having access to this kind of information is part of the same deal. Anyway, I don't think it is covered by the Data Protection Act because they aren't living. All this information is available elsewhere. Go easy on Fred. Crista

Dawn In what year did your Granddad die, if it's on Ancestry too? Theresa I understand what you are saying - it must be very upsetting for you.

This info. is publically available for free on 1837online too for the years 1984-2001. Of course, you need to know the name first but you can get the rest by guessing until you get a match. Was odd to see my rellies too, but I might be able to track down some that were born after 1901. Crista

Hi Ann, Yes its very worrying and i really want to find out where all this information came from. Fred seems to have gone a little quiet now. There was no hesitation from him on my first email to him, got a reply almost immediately, but as yet there is no reply as to who the contibuter was. I'll keep you all posted. Jane

Just emailed Fred Truter who owns the site. He says the information came from a contributer who uploaded 3.5 millions names and dates of births and deaths in bulk. Has'nt said who the contributer was though. Have emailed him for the name. Jane

It seems you get a few minutes and then it just stops (don't know the technical term). I can't understand why anyone would want to gather such information!!! I suppose us talking about it is reason enough. Seems a little bit sick to me!!!

Sorry Bob, Did'nt read all the replys. Understand that part a bit better now. Still very strange though. The buzz you get from finding deaths of distant relatives fades completly when you see information like this about very close recently dead family, especially when you have'nt posted it yourself, and don't know where it has come from. Jane

It is possible to get on you just have to keep trying. I think the site is immoral as with a big disjointed family this is not the way to find out someone is dead who you have been attempting to track down for years.
