1939 Census - yes, that's right 1939!!

Anyone aware that in 1939 a census of sorts was carried out in the UK (not too sure about Northern Ireland) to determine the populus at the time of the outbreak of WW!!? Most records are subject to the 100 year rule, but apparently certain records "slipped through the fingers" of the politicians and are lodged at appropriate records offices. This was announced at a recent Family History Society Meeting in relation to my home town (unfortunately only one suburb of my town "escaped" - but it couldn't possible be the only suburb in the UK to do so, now could it?) Worth asking about at your local Records Office maybe? Jacqui

I read about this somewhere in an article about a guided tour at Southport (GRO) Smedley Hydro. Apparently it was organised and done in about 3 weeks flat!! Seem to remember that there was doubt over whether it would ever be released. Will see if I can find the article. Maz. XX

Thanks Jacqui - I'd never heard of this one before. Well worth asking for to see if it exists for my area.
