Sorry, didn't mean the surname nutters!!! Only although having lived in 'ampshire for over forty years, I hail from the fair city of Nottingham. Now is there anyone out there to tell the rest of the world about Robin Hood and the Goose Fair? Norah in Hampshire

I'm really only a Nottingham Nutter by default - actually a Welsh Nutter by birth and proud of it!!! There is however the genuine article on this site - the one, the only ROBIN HOOD, who is a mind of information on all things Notts, and in true Robin tradition readily helps the poor and misguided (like yours truly) with the Census(s) from the year dot. If you ask him nicely I'm sure he has access to the Doomsday Book! Cum on me duck, show 'em ow to do it - it's black oe'er Bill's muthers! He, like I, will tell you that there is no truth in the rumour that Robin Hood hailed from Yorkshire - it is a sad line in propaganda put about by the likes of Lady Marian of the East End who has tried in recent days to turn the tide of mythology concerning the illustrious Robin towards the land of the Rose (Yorkshire). For the unitiated the Goose Fair is an annual event here in Nottingham where in the present day unscrupulous fairground attendants try (successfully usually) to prise your money from your hand by offering in return stomach-churning rides, thrills, spills burgers and hot-dogs (and yes, they are all stomach-churning - particularly the burgers!). The medieval fair from which it springs was far more select - you could buy chickens, sell goats, trade bows and arrows etc. and then walk home the odd 10 miles or so to your little hovel in the country! Nottingham is (in the words of the local radio station) the Worlds Best City! I rest my case. Jacqui

Hi Jacqui or should I address you as the Welsh Lady from Nottingham? As if Robin Hood would come from Yorkshire. It's grim up North (as our local radio station presenter would say). They are all big burly chaps up there aren't they? How would all of them have fitted inside The Major Oak. Nay me ducks, anyone who tries telling you that Robin Hood hailed from Yorkshire has got it all 'a--e about face' There's no Sherwood Forest in Yorkshire is there? And what about 'the smokin hot peas' at the Goose Fair, they don't do them down in Hampshire. And as for gravy on chips, they think you're barmy, it has to be vinegar only. Hah!!! Norah in Hampshire

Hi Kathryn Or should that be "eh up me duck"? I shall be up there in a couple of weeks and making a trip to the market in Vic. centre for a dish of 'ot peas'. Oh yes and of course a visit to Sneinton Market to load up with sweets, chocs. etc. My sister lives very near to Broad Marsh, and so over the past couple of years, I have seen all the upset that the new tram layout has created!!! Its lovely to stand and wait for a bus in Nottm. Someone will start up a conversation - thats what I miss here in the South. Glad that you like it and get back from time to time. Norah in Hampshire

I wa born in Nottinghamshire, lived on the borders of Notts and Derbys, then moved to Lancashire when I was 16, even now you have made me homesick talking about the Goose Fair and Robin Hood. That is where I am doing my researching. June

Jacqui Report 7 Jun 2004 21:45

How in goodness sake has this resurrected itself? Is there really life after death then? Was it you Norah? Has your computer delved into its dark history and pulled this out again? I thought I was suffering from deja vue! Nutters of Nottingham unite! we will keep Robin Hood for our own, in his rightful place (just at the foot of the castle wall - minus his arrow as some clever-dickeys keep nicking it!) Jacqui

Molly

Molly Report 8 Jun 2004 00:34

From Molly Brooks, If you are looking for a genuine Nottingham Nutter, Norah from Hampshire, you have definitely found one 'ere. Born and bred, I was. Never moved from Nottingham all my life and worked in the City apart from 9 years on Meadow Lane. We used to have 'Kiss me Quick' hats at Goose Fair when I was a lass. Don't see them now. Those were the days! The Trip to the Jerusalem pub was not bad either, but the best was dancing at the Palais. Also, what about those lions in front of the Council House. It was said that they roared if a virgin passed by All for now, Molly

Jacqui

Jacqui Report 8 Jun 2004 08:45

Hey Molly - anybody ever hear the lions roar? lol Jacqui

Elisabeth

Elisabeth Report 8 Jun 2004 08:51

Jacqui I think I did, must have been about 1950. Of course, I might have been dreaming, fast asleep in my pushchair at the time!

Jacqui

Jacqui Report 8 Jun 2004 13:23

LOL Elizabeth - I cannot recall hearing the lions roar in the 1906's (unless of course what I thought was the sound of hormones rushing round the bodies of the guys and gals was in fact the lions roaring!!) Nowadays when I pass the lions the only roaring I hear is the blood pressure! Jaqui
