If he was born before 1881, look him up in the census for that year. It will give his age at that date (you can work out his birth year), also details of everyone else in the house. You will be able to track his birth, to the nearest quarter-year on 1837online. I have a copy of the census and will do a look-up if you think he would be in it.

I had one ancestor who "changed" his date of birth to make his age closer to his wife; he subtracted three years. And my mum has made herself younger so many times, that my brother and I are just about older than she is. Can't believe everything you hear, especially in my family. :~)

Brief word of warning; The date of birth given on my grandmothers death certificate was wrong ! She was a year younger than she'd led people to believe. So as with other sources, when you're looking for a birth always look a year or two either side of the given DOB if you draw a blank.

I have (Ithink) done quite well on my tree so far but .. in order to get my grandfathers birthdate i have had to apply for his death certificate so i can then get his birth certificate and thereby get his parents names. Whilst i don't mind doing this is there an easier way. I don't have any family to ask and am not sure how else to do it.
