thank you everyone. I am now much clearer. Geoff.. you obviously have a better dictionary. .. my Heinemann English dictionary lists "a person or thing considered to represent a set or conventional type" so I was off on the line of an impressionist like say Rory Bremner!. Cheers, Carla

Remember the days when people had dictionaries? Stereotype: A method of producing cast-metal printing plates from a mould from a forme of type matter in papier mache or some other material - all clear?

Think Julie is right - from Jeeves it certainly looks like someone who set the typeface in a printing press or something similar. You should have a check on Google too maybe.... Maz. XX

I'm replying cos no one else has - this is a guess - something to do with printing? A stereotype is a relief printing plate. (it is derived from a french word, by the way). And what about stenographer - using shorthand and putting it on a typewriter -or is that too modern. Maybe your ancestor typed in stereo - sorry, got silly now.
