after sampling many devon cream teas at Tordown Farm in WEst Buckland, N. Devon, it's definitely cream first, spread thickly with a dollop of jam on the top, worth a visit to the above, a 15th century farmhouse, not changed from then and a very warm welcome, oh my taste buds are tingling at the thougt of eating one right now! Short and sweet - cream first. Has to be.

As a Devonian definitly CREAM first and only Strawberry jam will do. Christine

Dear Linda Heartily agree with you - the Southern Cross in Newton Poppleford makes the dreamiest lightest scones for cream teas ever. We make huge detours whenever we're in the Devon or Cornwall area to make sure we finish our holiday there! (Favourite haunt for Sidmouth Folk Festival attendees as well - anyone been to that?) The scone is definiatley cut in half, Jam first (home made Strawberry preferably) And then as much cream as you can. the two best palces in Devon for these are at Dartmeet on Dartmoor, and the southern Cross guest house in which is in a village near budleigh salterton. I'm homeisck at the thought of this, you don't get proper cream up here in the north. Linda P

Jam first for me. But pity we poor Calgarians, I haven't had clotted cream for YEARS, because we can't get it here (or double or single, only whipping) Patsy

Hi everyone, Just been making some scones,8oz DEVONSHIRE CREAM, 1lb JAR STRAWBERRY JAM.This recipe is for ONE PERSON, not enough to share. No only joking. As a true DEVONIAN,cant speak for the CORNISH,the DEVONSHIRE CORRECT WAY IS JAM first,CREAM ON TOP.This is the correct way,but it is purely a matter of preference.Lovely topic though. regards trish

In which case Norah, if you fancy a cuppa while you're in Nottingham, you'd better come here as, apart from a brief trip down South, I'm only 45 minutes away!!!! (Don't get much clotted cream up 'ere tho', we're more into Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese!!).

Sorry Daisy Daisy and Kathleen about April, much as I would have liked to feed you some gutty gobfuls, methinks I am booked to visit fair city of Nottingham to renovate No.2 sister's garden. Renovate is the right word I think, I only get to do it twice a year, the soil is like compost and the WEEDS!!! Eh, think I'll get her on making the scones to go with the inumerable cups of tea that I need. Yeah!!!
