Hi Rachael, welcome! There are also books at libraries (at least in the U.S.) that explain genealogy. Last time I was wandering around that section I noticed a "Genealogy for Dummies" book. (Not that you're a dummy!! :~) Just had a LOT of great information!!) I might suggest you keep good records (where you obtained the information), write everything down, and perhaps set up binders or something similar for each branch that you are researching. Also, listen to family tales, but keep an open mind. My dad's side of the family supposedly were French, lived in England long enough to anglicize the name and then immediately settled in Canada. Found out they lived in England AT LEAST 100 years before "crossing the pond". Good luck with your search!!

Rachel You need to start collecting Birth and Marriage certificate. On birth cert it will give you the childs parents and an idea as where they are living. It will also give fathers occupation. On marriage certs you will be given the bride and grooms age, area where they were living, fathers name and occupation of father and groom. The brides maiden name With this information you can look up the parents birth and marriage certs extra. useful sites Freebmd.rootsweb.com Familysearch.org The census. 1881 is available at Familysearch 1901 census is available but you have to pay. There is a 1901 decoder which is free butit does give limited info. If you have a problem just ask someone may well be able to hellp you. Good luck

I'm starting to do a family tree from scratch, and having got details from all my 'live' relatives, don't know where to start to get further back. Has anyone got any suggestions about anywhere I can find out the real basics of where to look for certain information ? Thanks
