Hi all, I'm one of the lucky ones. My parents weren't married but my father attended the registration of our births and, therefore, we took his surname. I have now followed his line to 1511 - wouldn't have been able to get anywhere if he hadn't insisted being there. Jan from Gravesend, Kent.

Julia I know what you mean I shouldn't have been born a HANLEY as mum was unmarried, and as i can't trrace my dad there is no branch!!!! Shelli

Thanks Crista - that is my Eunice and her sister and I've since found out that Valerie died in 1904 aged 6. Juliexx

Same thing here too. My husband's grandfather was born in a workhouse and his mother wasn't married, so our name shouldn't be Dyer. I have read that usually, unmarried mothers gave the child their father's surname as a middle name, so I have wondered as grandfather was Ernest Henry, perhaps his father's surname was Henry. I should look for that surname in the area they lived, but haven't got round to it. So we too have family somewhere, but I will never be able to find them.

Julia, If you're looking for her on the 1901 census, I believe you might find her as Eunice Davies in Wem. I think she had a sister called Valerie May too. Crista

............ my grandmother, Eunice Annie Dawes who had 3 illegitimate children (my father and his brother and sister who all took her surname) all with different fathers I believe - had married or even had the father’s name on their birth certificates, my maiden name would be different and I would have a lot more rellies to find! Have I been cheated out of more research and who am I? I could be related to anyone out there and not know it. By the way, Eunice is hiding from me behind a brick wall somewhere and I'm hoping that now I'm talking about her perhaps she will pop up - please! Juliexx
