I have had a lot of trouble trying to trace my father's birth certificate, my parents where divorced over 50 years ago and no contact since. Accorrding to my parent's marriage certificate he was Robert Henry Frank Fowler, father Alexander Douglas Fowler, after a lot of research over about 18 months, I finally discovered he was registered as Robert Henry frank Renwick at Birth, father Henry Frederick Renwick. His mother Elzabeth May Belger appears to have been married to henry only about three weeks before he was born, but on her marriage certificate she was living at the same address as a Douglas Alexander Fowler,(and I think his wife Adelaide) Elizabeth and her new husband where living there when my father was born a couple of weeks later. Two years later she is living at the same address with Alexander Douglas fowler (I believe this to be the same person as Douglas Alexander Fowler above) and has a daughter by him. She goes on to have more children with him until he dies in 1936 and is described as his widow on his deathe certificate, but I can find no trace of marriage though have not completed the 1930's marriages. Can anyone help to unravel this mystery

Hi Maureen, If I'm allowed a complete guess, I'd say that the father is probably Mr Renwick and Mr Fowler took her on. People regularly made up information on marriage certs to avoid the stigma of being illegitimate, so I'd go with the birth cert on this one personally. Rick.

Thanks Rick, it is actually my father who has two fathers, and have marriage certificate of Renwick so he would not have been illegitimate, would normally think this it just seems strange his mother was living at the same address as Fowler and later had a child by him still at thisaddress, also Renwick died after Fowler and would have thought if his legitimate son he would have wanted to keep in touch. Thanks for your thoughts though Maureen
