Thank you Karen. I have found a lot of interesting info on the electoral rolls and the trade directory sounds good. I would like to check whether steeplejack and stonemason rumours in the family mist are true. You have given me another idea too. We believe one of my great great aunts was a nurse who sailed to south africa for the Boer War - would I be able to check with the Royal College of Nursing or would this information be held elsewhere? Thanks again, Abigail

Kelley's or Kellys is a trade directory and it will also tell you addresses of people in the year you want, providing that the library you go to stocks that particular year and the area. Libraries usually just stock their local and nearby areas. Best to telephone the library's inquiry desk and ask them what years and areas they have. I am also currently researching the Kelly's Directory for some of my ancestors in the 1930's. This directory has been going strong for donkey's years. Good luck

Thanks Maureen, I am trying to flesh out the birth, marriage, death certificate profile I have of my grandmother and also to pick out any clues as to my father's parentage too! This kind of research is fascinating. I am new to it but I know that there must be more that the 1901 census and scotland origins! Regards, Abigail

If they are over 21 you could look for them on the electoral roll. Most big Libaries hold there own district or will inform you where they are held. Some will actually look for you but most charge. If you live locally you can do it yourself, not sure about occcupations, though beluieve there are trade directories but do not know how you get them. I found Norwich helpful but Lambeth I am having problems finding their electoral rolls without paying a fortune. Good Luck Maureen

I notice on the 1901 census website there is an address search facility. Is there any other way of finding out who else lived in a particular address in the 1930s if you know one of the occupants? Also if you know someone's occupation is it possible to find out who their employer was if you have that address? Thanks Abigail
