Carol, always makes me smile when I see you post something - I have a sister called Carol Smith :D I'm not doing TOO badly with the SMITH's actually, although need to pop to Bedford CRO at some point to look at the parish records, but after a few initial hitches I've got on OK. It's one of my other lines where I've got an issue with illegitimacy. With no fathers name on either the birth certificate or the parish records, is there anywhere else I can look ? I've seen reference somewhere to "Bastardy Lists" wheer record was made of the father and how much he had to pay for the childs upkeep - anyone used these before ? OHH and Thanks very much Lindy !!

I would'nt bank on it Paul - I was looking for a fourth in a row James - turned out to be a William! lol. I know how you feel tho' hubbies G.Grandad took it upon himself either to lie about his name or his birthplace - we think most likely both, our trail goes cold in 1860. Sue.

Hi Paul, perhaps 'he' will jump out at you when you least expect it. One of my problems is with Thomas Allens three of them in a row, Gt X3, GtX4, and possibly GtX5 Grandfathers. So confusing. Ann Glos

Lindy, yes taht must be incredibly frustrating ! Still, at least you're in the Algarve so have some sunshine to compensate lol I have problems with names too, from my grandfather backwards my direct line goes John SMITH Thomas SMITH John SMITH Thomas SMITH I guess I now just look for another John SMITH lol Lou - no I'm not THAT disappointed, it just closes off one line, I'm pretty doubtful I'll ever find an answer though unless someone invents time travel.

Hi Paul, You are not alone. I do my researching in the South African Archives. I have three gggrandfathers with identical names. They appear to be cousins but I don't know which on of the three is mine. They all had lots of children and more then one wife. The naming pattern was: First son - paternal grandfather Second - son maternal grandfather Third - son father First - daughter maternal grandmother Second - daughter paternal grandmother Third - daughter mother This is driving me nuts :-(( I am waiting for a C.D. The 1890 voters roll for the Eastern Cape South Africa. Hopefully, this will help shed some light on who is who in the Zoo. Lindy:-))

Well I'm finally admitting defeat - I will never know who my 3x Grandfather's father was. After getting a birth certificate with no fathers name I went and checked the parish records yesterday, in the hope of finding a "Father reputed to be..." on the baptism records, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Never mind, I guess it's just one path of research that's closed to me, I'll concentrate on the other 476 ! lol
