How many living ancestors?

it is sad when links are lost. I imagine most of us grew up having grandparents around. Now, although people are perhaps living longer, they tend to be much older when they become grandparents, as lots of people don't start families until their 30's. In my family it's considered late if you start having children at 22, so I guess I am a bit of a lost case (32!). Re Mothers' Day v Mothering Sunday - interesting - never knew about that distinction. The problem with grandmothers is (at least in our family) we give grannies cards and flowers too. My poor mother has five children, six grandchildren, and a great grandchild. She was inundated with flowers and chocolates on Mothering Sunday. She hasn't had mine yet (I'm taking her to the garden centre to buy a tree)

Have to agree with Kirsteen, we're all leaving it a little late these days. I'm 31 with no children of my own and I only have one Grandmother left alive. One Grandad I didn't meet, died 1945... my mum's parents I did meet but they died 1977 and 1998. Met one Grt Grandmother who died 1981 and missed meeting another Grt Grandmother who died in Canada in 1994 aged 99. My step neices have a full compliment of three sets of grandparents (isn't divorce wonderful?!!), no-one older on either side. Kinda sad for the younger generations and think of all that information lost !!!! Lou

As far as coping with Mothering Sunday is concerned, (please note that Mothers Day is American. We do not have Mothers Day here) He only has ONE mother.

If my brother has children they will have 1 grandparent and two Aunts. If my husband and I have children they will have two grandparents and One Aunt & One Uncle and two cousins. We started with 3 grandparents, and two parents, no Aunts or Uncles. Now apart from our partners, it's just us. We do have our Mum's cousins but only really see one of them and she's in her late 70's. Probably one of the reasons I chose to look for my ancestors! Naomi

Three of my granddaughters great grandparents died before she was born, but we have photo of her taken last year sat on the lap of her 99 year old GG grandmother, who died in October, and she has 2 GGG aunts and 2GGG Uncles still alive.

I have a very vague feeling that I have put this thread on before, but cannot remember the outcome if I did. Maybe I just dreamed.... Anyway: My little great-nephew has, alive: 2 parents 4 grandparents 8 great-grandparents 4 great-great grandparents (all grannies) And a potential great-great-great grandparent died only 8 years before he was born! These are all blood relations, not step-relations. Is this a record. How will he cope with Mothers day cards for 1 mother, and 10 grandmothers of various descriptions?
