Hi, I think that Grandparents day is in September. It has been around for sometime. Heard that it is because so many people are getting divorced and loads of Grandparents are not having access to their Grandchildren. I agree that we are all being ripped off. This year I saw cards from pets for Mothering Sunday!! Jill

There should be no mothers day or fathers day - instead they should be rewarded on the day of birth for their children!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I still have Mothering Sunday to come. It's sometime in May. This is in the Netherlands. I think in Spain it's another day too. I used to spend my winters in Spain, and this is the first winter home for 8 years. How quickly one forgets dates!

Of course here in the UK we celebrate Mothering Sunday as the 4th(?) Sunday in Lent. Don't Europe and the US do it in May?

Di - at least I qualify for 3 "Days" - Mother's Day, Secretary's Day (wonder what the boss will give me - big fat pay rise?) and Housewife's Day (already drinking wine, and just eaten biggest part of box of Maltesers, supplied by Hubbie) What a life eh? Yep it's 30th November, and I've just seen in the shops cards for Nurses day which is just coming up!

Syliva, I think you will find that the Patron Saint of Scotland is St Andrew - I'll probably be corrected if I'm wrong. Not at all sure if there is an official St Andrew's day - again we will soon find out - lol Jacqui

John, If you think a thread should be started about St. George's Day, then start one, don't leave it to somebody else. We'll have St. David's Day and St. Patrick's Day, and who is the patron saint of Scotland? Can't leave these others out as they make up Great Britain. Sylvia

I think we mothers, if we're honest enough, would now miss mothers' day, wouldn't we? If our children didn't turn up, we would be wondering why. I always bake special cakes for everybody, and those who want to stay for dinner do. A family day really.

Your husband is right, it's a ploy. On Mothering Sunday, I also receive a card for Grandmother from my grandchildren. So although there is already a grandparents day, the greeting card firms get them in wherever and whenever they can. But I'm not complaining mind. Norah

Yes, we've a Secretary's Day too. What a lot of commercial rubbish. I agree with others when I add that the nicest Mothering Sunday I always had was when the children came home from Sunday school with a bunch of flowers picked from ??? along the way, no questions were asked. Even now, when the children come to me for Mothering Sunday I prefer that they didn't waste their money on gifts. A visit is enough.

I saw in our local card shop that this Wednesday, April 21st is 'Secretary's Day'! Let's vote for the daftest celebratory day! No offence to secretaries who do a fantasic job :o) Sue

When I said "here" I meant in the Netherlands, please don't say Holland as many do, as that is only a fraction of the Netherlands. No "Grandparents Day" is very new for us here. I feel sorry for all those women who always wanted children and couldn't have them. They miss out on Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day and now "Grandparents Day". Anyway, where is it going to end: "first father", "second father", "first grandma" "second grandma". The mind boggles when it comes to divorce!

Where's "here" Sylvia, America by any chance ? That's where Mothers day and fathers Day originated... it's all a marketing exercise I'm afraid, just created to sell greetings cards. If any of my grandparents were still alive I'm sure they'd not need a card once a year to know how much they were appreciated...
