Missing from 1901 British census - how come???

FOUND THEM!!! I tried your trick Alan - I entered just the baby's name and age and birthplace as Dorset. The baby's surname is spelt correctly as SAMWAYS but the parents have been recorded as SAMMAYS on the 1901 census website. Having viewed a PDF of the actual census record as well, I can see that it was spelt correctly by the enumerator but has been mis-read by whoever transcribed the name onto the website. Mystery solved - thanks again Alan and others. Justin |

Thanks to all for replies. Jane - their details are: George Samways, employed as Carter, born c1873 in Dorset Emma Jane Samways, born c1873 in Dorset Beatrice Mabel Samways, born 1896 in Dorset I believe the census place would be Sydling St Nicholas, a village in Dorset (only based on fact that they were living there in early 1902 however). All help gratefully rec'd! |

I am having the same problem with my Grandparents too!! My Mother said that they were so poor that they used to get up in the midle of the night and run away without paying the rent!!!! Any Lancashire Parkinsons please help me. I wish you luck with your search!! |

Don't wish to be a kill joy here but of course they could just have been missed. It can happen. I pity any of my decendants trying to find me on the 1991 or 2001 census's. I'm not. In both cases I was away from home on census night, thought that I would be put down on the place I was staying but wasn't and of course not put down at home either. Whoops. If you think they may still be living in the same area as the 1891 census, find someone living nearby, and then just look through all the sheets for that area. I have located several family members this way on the 1881 and 1891 census's. Best of luck Janet |

yes, my grandfather, who was 5 at the time, was staying with his grandmother and they just dittoed her surname, which was not the same as his. Keep chipping away and eventually you'll get there. Sheila x |

My great-grandparents were married in 1896, I know this from their marriage certificate. They had a daughter the same year, who lived well into old age herself. However, the three of them are nowhere to be found on the 1901 census records online. I know they were not abroad, so where are they? I've tried various spellings of the surname, in case this was the problem, but still no luck (and the surname is not an unusual one anyway). Has anyone else found that relatives are missing from the 1901 census? I'm reasonably new to genealogy, so I would appreciate some comments! Many thanks - Justin |
