Hi Everyone, What an interesting thread this is. How intriguing the things we find out when tracing our family trees. How about this one. Would anyone know the legalities of Surname. The name of the father is not the name that he went by,on the birth cert. should the child have been given the surname of the correct name,or the other name. Getting myself confused now,but hope you all understand what Im trying to get at.Been out in the sun today.Found out real father was called something completely different. regards trish

Laura Your situation is what's called re-registration. If the parents are not married at the time of the birth or if the fathers details are not entered originally, the birth is 're-registered' if the parent's marry or want the father's details entered at any time. So your birth date will appear correctly but the date of registration ie: when the information was given to the registrar of births, will be the new date. You can get a copy of your full birth cert from the register office where you were born and it cost £7.50. It should be the new entry as I don't think you can get the old entry once a birth has been re-registered. I used to be a registrar and I don't think the laws have changed on this but your local register office will answer any queries that you have, or can you not ask your parents? If not maybe another relative will know when your parents married. Hope this makes things a bit clearer for you. Debs

I'm not sure if this is true of the full certificate but I have a short form of my own birth certificate. This shows the date the certificate was issued - not the date my birth was registered. I have a copy of my mother's birth certificate, the full version and this also shows the date the certificate was issued but not the date her birth was registered. As this is one I obtained a couple of years ago I don't know for sure that this has always been the case. My daughter's birth was registered by the hospital in which she was born, I did not get a copy of her certificate until some time later. That had the date of issue not the date her birth was registered. Your parents did not have to be married for your fathers name to be included provided he attended the registery office at the time of registration. Kathleen

Hi Laura, Dont quote me on this but I've been looking at things like name changes for research myself and having been on the deed poll website,I believe that if a persons name is changed legally through the courts via adoption of a child to alter its name then you would recieve a new birth certificate however I am not so sure that your date of birth would be altered to coincide with your name change.My advice would be to go to the register office where your birth was registered and they will be able to search the records to give you the answer to your query,Hope this is of some help,Best wishes,Fiona x

Can any one tell me why on my birth cert, it is not reg until 67 when I was born in 60 ? My Mum and Dad where not married when I was born and I am not sure if I was called her former name unsure when they got married .Do you think I was called her former name if so could my birth cert be changed when she married my Dad ? Sorry I know I am thick, hope some one can explain thankyou
