Every winter I would suffer so when I was about 8 they where whipped out. Dad told me I would get jelly and ice-cream afterwards. The 1st thing they gave me to eat when I woke up from the operation was TOAST. I was gutted. My son had his tonsils out when he was 18, he had a very bad attack of quinsey which ment he was admitted to hospital as an emergency, on a drip and antibiotics for 4 days. Then he had to wait 6 months before they would take them out. Maggie

Hi there, whip 'em out at birth I say! Only joking. My three all suffered terribly before reluctantly, medical profession decided they did need them out. They all had them out by the time they were six, each one got it done a little earlier, because I fought so much. They thrived after it. Don't blame yourself though you did your best! Anne-Marie

Sylvia, Don't be too upset about your daughter not having her tonsils out years ago. I had mine out when I was 4 years old (43 years ago) and was told by my doctor last year that I had tonsilitis, apparently they can grow back again! And yes, I still get problems with them now! Maggy

Judith, Thanks for the kinds words, have tears in my eyes,

My Father, who was a Doctor never believed in taking them out,I think he used to feel that any infection was trapped by them therefore not getting into the rest of the body. I had a rough time with mine and eventually had them taken out when I was 27.

Judith, As you say, depends on the doctor and the trend. Our Ear, Nose and Throat doctor operated on my nose - to straighten it - never knew it wasn't straight before. Then it was my son's turn - same operation. And last my youngest daughter - all 3 with the same ops. He missed my other daughter out! She is the one who is now going to have her tonsils out. She has a history of everything going wrong, and this is at the back of my mind. She had an appendicitis op some years ago and instead of a week in hospital was 6 weeks, infection set in. She had twins and the second one strangled itself at birth. She had a navel op. and that went wrong. When you have children, they are never out of your thoughts are they.

On doctor's advice my son had his tonsils out when he was about 3 or 4 years of age, but our doctor said that it was not necessary for our two girls to have theirs out. My youngest daughter has had hers taken away at a mature age. Now lo and behold my eldest daughter, at the age of 46 ,has to go into hospital to have her tonsils out. I feel quite devastated about this, because it is not such a nice operation when you are older. I know I did my best, but feel very sad that I didn't persevere and demand for the girls to be operated on when they were small.
