Tudor Report 10 May 2004 08:38

I like techno-thrillers, like Tom Clancy's books - well-researched and full of action. Also books (fiction and factual) on flying and aviation subjects in general, and in a completely different direction, stories of the Navy of Nelson's day. Suppose I have somewhat eclectic tastes really.

Lynn

Lynn Report 9 May 2004 23:51

I'm an avid book worm when not on GC and love nothing more than going away for the odd weekend in the old caravan to catch up with the reading matter...Fav books so far are .... All the ones written by Patricia Cornwell which are forensic science novels, also Danielle Steele, to name but a few. Today I started reading "The day after tomorrow" by Allan Folsom which was his first book and It has so far been a gripping read, couldn't put it down even when cooking dinner. I also believe it has just been made into a film Lynn

As with films (on another thread here), I like a book that has a good story, is well-plotted, and well-written; any book that starts dragging up the cliches will lose me quickly, as will any author who follows the same format over and over (Patricia Cornwell being a good example). Enjoy the Harry Potter books (though JKR cannot do angry), love the Discworld series (and others by Terry Pratchett), enjoy Chisham (if that's how you spell his name - I don't have a book to hand), and many of the classics, too (Dickens, Stephenson - RL, not the engineer - tales of Sherlock Holmes, etc.), plus the Sharpe books... actually, the list seems endless! I'll stick with the first sentence - a good story, well-written. Rob

Mainly non-fiction and I have several on the go at the same time. My current bedside books are Samual Pepys by Claire Tomalin and Human Instinct by Robert Winston. I select one or the other when I am in bed, In my living room I am into Eight little Piglets by Stephen Jay Gould. When I feel like a spot of fiction I try to find something by Ed McBain Len

I've found your replies really interesting! Maz - I couldn't possibly read more than one book at once! I don't fancy trying the Harry Potter books at all! But I have been known to get my head down and not look up until I've finished a book! My own favourites are modern Irish authors, comedies like the 'Shopaholic' series, Bridget Jones, etc.

Sue Report 9 May 2004 22:06

Historical fiction is also my favourite read, but I also like some autobiographies and biographies. At the moment I'm reading "Remembering the Farm" which is about life on farms in Rural Canada. My GGrandparents were homesteaders/farmers in Saskatchewan (emigrated from Monmouthshire in 1909) and I am enjoying reading the memories of the old farmers. Sue

Gotta be a bit of blood and guts for me - fave is Stephen King - or forensic/detective, or humourous. Mills and Boon leaves me cold I'm afraid, but true life - crime or biography - is very interesting. Afraid I do the classics a bit too, but then I do work in a library and can't resist anything!! At the moment I am browsing a new Genealogy on the net book which just came in to the library, plus a book for parents of children with Special Needs written by a friend of mine. Then I am reading (in bed, when I get there!) At Home with the Queen - hubby beware, I may start to copy her - and a book of short stories by an excellent mystery writer called Lawrence Block. Can't just read one thing at a time I'm afraid!! Maz. XX

When I'm not on GC, I can usually be found with my nose in a book. I keep seeing newspaper and magazine articles where they ask 'celebs' what their current favourite book is - and it's always something really academic! Will nobody admit to reading a bit of trash? Chick lit? Romance?
