How long is a piece of string?

I work on reception and it falls into the same category as "Do you know how long they are going to be on the phone for?" It really really winds me up - am I psychic? :)

If you were to form it into a circle, then the circumference( length) would be pi * r2 that dont look right pi times r squared.? or is that the area that the string would surround?
