Hello Di, No I don't know where the name Long Johns comes from. I thought Len would have answered. He seems to know all the answers. I have some woollen maillots (don't know if that is an English word and couldn't find it in the Dutch/English dictionary). and I wear these under a long pair of trousers if its very cold in the winter. We live in a harbour and it's always windy here.

It's forbidden to copy my words. You'll be accused of cheating. Anyway that's what I learnt at school.

What about long johns? I wonder where the name came from? I bought my husband a few pairs to get him through the cold winter; together with vests with sleeves, he has survived yet another winter, without even a cold!!
