I just thought I should let you all know that my wonderful husband, Malcolm, has just given his 50th blood donation today. We only remembered to attend at the last minute and had to dash back into town. He now has a gold badge (to go with the silver one) and a brand new ballpoint pen. Cert to follow. I am so proud of him because I am so squeamish that I cannot bring myself to join him when donating blood, but I just like to think of all the people he has helped over the years. I am so proud.

Am also a blood donor, and have been since I was 18. I think that I have given 48 donations so far, so not long to my 50th. Hubby John and daughter Emma are also blood donors, but can't talk son Richard into it. He's a 6' 4" rugby player and a wimp!! Emma is living in Madrid and wanted to give blood after the bombings, but said that they gave her the third degree for being British (something to do with Mad Cow Disease)! Just feel that by giving blood we are all doing our little bit to help. Maggy

Congratulations Malcolm! What a wonderful achievement. My husband was a blood donor from the age of 18 and did 48 donations until his motor bike accident. He was given 9 units of blood which unfortunately bars him from donating again. I went once and was anaemic so they offered me some! LOL I've never plucked up the courage again :o( Sue

Hi Terri; I received two blood transfusions during emergency surgery in 1999 and am still able to donate blood. I think I had to wait two years before I could give again. Maybe the rules are different in the UK than they are in Canada.

I haven't donated blood since we moved (5 years back) but it used to take ages to get the blood out of me - the nurse called me a "slow bleeder"!! LOL

My husband and I were blood donors. We gave blood until the age when we weren't allowed anymore. When I worked in England the Red Cross used to come along to the firm where I worked and then everybody could see who was donating and who was not.

my husband is a regular blood donor as was my dad before he died,i was able to give blood a couple of times then got anaemic so not able to now ,tried for few months but always anaemic even though ate plenty of greens, liver etc few weeks before hand up to day i tried to give, its so annoying wanting to help and you find you can't.
