Do you believe in the Magpie song 1 for sorrow 2 joy 3 for girl 4 for a boy 5 for silver 6 for gold 7 for a secret never to be told. The reason i ask is that for the last 6 weeks or so i have had 1 magpie where ever i am. ie front of the house, back of the house. when i went to the shops one flew down and landed just inches away from me. I have had nothing but bad luck, bad health etc during this time. My head tells me that this is just concidence, but my heart is telling me different. what do you think and is their anyway i can rid this run of bad luck. Thanks for listening Sue-Manchester

Hi Sue - I have magpies nesting in the trees at the end of my garden and see them all the time in varying numbers - my luck is no worse or better than anyone else's, so I think you can rule them out as the cause of your bad run. Or you could buy a catapult and be on the safe side!! ;-)) Hope your luck changes soon!! Maz. XX

No, I don't believe it at all. There are alot of magpies about at the moment just waiting their chance to raid nests for eggs or unfortunate fledglings. We get alot round here so according to the rhyme, there's not much hope for us. I hope your luck changes though.

We have loads here too. The only bad luck is for the other smaller birds who are being attacked mid flight. Also I think the baby squirrel has gone to them too:(

I quite like Magpies ,they are inquisitive ,funny to watch most of the time and when there is food on the go they can be quite cheeky .My son was having a barbie last week and one landed right next to his foot and sat there till he threw it a bit of roll.Quite a few birds get bold during the mating season,it,s a pity it dosn,t work with the other sort, lol,Fred.

Didn't they have the name "the thieving magpies"? We have far too many of these birds here, stealing the eggs from blackbirds and other small birds, along with crows I would say "get rid of a few of them".

I always salute and say" Good morning Mr. Magpie" three times when I see a solitary one. But they are usually in pairs so you should soon see the partner, and that means 2 for joy!! My neighbours must think I am mad if they see me doing this lol. Margaret

Hello Sue, No, it's definitely just an old wives' tale, and you mustn't let your heart rule your head. However ......, whenever I see a magpie out on the road, I always check whether there's another one close by! lol! Philip
