Car Alarms Faults can develop with car alarms leading to the persistent sounding of the alarm, which can cause distress to local residents. If a car alarm sounds for more than one hour, notice can be served on the vehicle owner. This allows the Council to stop the noise by, if necessary, forcibly entering the vehicle or removing it to a suitable place to silence the alarm. The owner or keeper of the vehicle will be responsible for any cost incurred from this action.

Code of Practice on Noise from Audible Intruder Alarms 1982. The scheme encourages alarm owners to register their alarm with the Environmental Services Unit of the Council, and to notify the local constabulary of at least two nominated key holders. Whilst, in accordance with the Code of Practice, all alarms should be fitted with a 20-minute cut-off device, key holder details provide a quick and easy means of accessing a property and ensuring deactivation of an alarm in instances where the alarm continues to ring. Where keyholder details are not available or the keyholders are not contactable, Council Officers are often left with no option but to take formal action.

My neighbour's car alarm keeps going off around 1am. We have now found the culprits though. The local yobs have discovered that if they rock the car as they go past it, the alarm goes off! Now my neighbour has a dilema. Should he turn off his alarm, thereby letting the yobs break into the car (or worse), or leave it to go off most nights. It only sounds for about 3 minutes, but that's enough to wake you. Why are these kids roaming the streets at 1am? Do they sneak out once their parents are asleep? They are aged between 13 and 16. Deirdre Your neighbour might be able to alter the sensitivity of the alarm to make it harder for the yobs to set it off by rocking the car.

Sue, Why doesn't your neighbour hide nearby with some "friends" and when the children rock his car, jump out and frighten them. Okay, I'm sorry - I've watched too many films. Something should be done though - where do these children live?

Thanks for your sympathy! He actually sets his alarm at extra-sensitive because of the problems he has had with the local kids. Its a black VW souped up Golf GTI and it used to go off if you even looked at it. However, since someone threw a load of acid or paintstripper over it he doesn't seem so bothered! (no it wasn't me and I don't know who DID do it!). Apparently he was on his way to Birmingham today and had to come back and cancel his trip. Oh dear, what a shame, never mind! Think it was going for about 3-4 hours in total and its a LOUD one! Don't have any trouble with burglar alarms round here - we're all too common to have one! Maz. XX
