Hi I agree the tax is ridiculous on fuel, the prices on most things nowadays are beyond a joke, and whether you work or not everyone seems to struggle, or have to tighten their belts somewhere along the line. luxuries really are becoming luxuries!!!!! once again!!! but like everything we will have a moan and get on with it, i for one need my car, as i can't walk far, and it just means i'll have to have a few more days of cheaper meals,to be able to use it. lol sandra

Hi Bob Have to agree with you - this is getting a little to serious for a general chat board on a genealogy site! Shall we agree to differ and call it a day! Best wishes Badger Bill

Yes Bill I do know about China's policy, that’s the one that human rights groups in the west are complaining about. (Though there is some justification if the methods reported are true). The point was that the rest of the developing world are starting to devour energy like the west and this will only make the problem much worse, not only with energy supply but also with emissions. Of course it isn’t just fuel, all the plastic we chuck away is oil based. The energy of fossil fuels is the stored sunlight of thousands of years, it can’t be renewed. If we don’t control ourselves then nature, in the end, will. Bit serious though this for a genealogy site! Bob

Bob - the chinese have addressed the problem of spiralling population. Did you not know that in China, a couple may have only one child? This is controlled by state enforced abortion. Mayabe other countries should take note? Yes petrol prices are too high, and yes, the present government is mainly to blame via taxation. Would be nice if we could get a political party to take the bull by the horns, and admit they do not know how to govern, and take a trip to the states to find out how they manage to have such a high standard of living with LOWER income tax and LOWER sales taxes [most states have about 6 - 6.5% on fuel]. Australia is cheaper to live in as well. Yes, before anyone asks, I would emigrate to either were it not for the grandchildren! All countries mentioned I have experienced first hand, not hearsay. How about a campaign to remove most tax from petrol, leave it at say 7%, plus 5p per litre to get rid of road tax. That way my gas guzzling 2.5 litre MPV would raise far more income that my wife's baby Suzuki at 999cc. Regards from a long established disgruntled Badger Bill

Petrol prices are not going to come down in the long run. The demand from China and other eastern counties is spiralling upwards as they become more “westernised”. The planet cannot sustain billions of people being each moved around by 100 HP engines. This together with the world population problem which no one wants to address suggests a bleak future for the world as this finite resource expires. Don’t believe that alternate sources of energy will be found. Its not going to happen. I can see only global conflict ahead. That cheered you up? Bob

I had a similar thread going but it was pointed out that the governments are to blame with their high taxes, so if you really want lower petrol prices then your X's shouldn't go to the big 3. It also occured to me that this would be a good way for Shell or someone to nobble their main rival. regards Dave

Campaign to Reduce UK Petrol Prices - a rip-off at 80p a litre We are going to hit close to 89p a litre by the summer. If petrol prices are to come down we need to take some intelligent, united action. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at 77p -80p, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people! I am sending this note to a; lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people.. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all thaen more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE Action: It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons (75p)Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso

Yes they are, but three quarters of what you pay at the pump is tax, the actual fuel cost is just under 20p per litre. So don't blame the oil producers or distributors. So boycotting one or two suppliers (see below) will not bring prices down. The answer is to not buy at all, cut out a journey or use public transport and reduce the £40 billion that Gordon is milking us for until he brings the tax down to French levels.
