My friend is a GC memeber and has been on to Gwent Records Office asking for info on her uncle who was in an asylum in Abergevenny. She got in touch with GRO but they will not give details of Past Medical Records. She only wants a year of birth or death. Can anyone suggest any other way to find out. She doesnt know anything else about him only where he was instituationalized and has a photo of him.

Has she contacted the Asylum itself? If she is next of kin, or has their authority, they may release this information to her. You don't give any idea of when this occured - is the Asylum even still there, how is she sure he has died etc. Otherwise the only thing I can suggest is that she checks with libraries in her area until she finds one with BMD records and then just works backwards until she finds a death. Then order the cert, which will give an approximate age, then search for a birth from there. Good luck! Maz. XX
