What is an UNDER BLEACHER?

"bleachers" are as suggested, a row of seats in a gynasium. However, I would have thought that, as an occupation, the meaning would be the obvious one - someone in the textile industry who bleached fabrics or fibres.

i think bleachers are something to do with the construction industry ,and i,m sure i remember a few having to be replaced in a local schools gymnasium, but i could be wrong.I think it,s something to do with seating ,but wether it,s to do with kids bums ,as in sitting on ,or seating as in a platform for putting something heavy on ,i,m not sure.Fred.

Lisa, try putting this on the tips board as well; I know there are some people on there who have old reference books and often find old occupations. Good luck. Mandy :)

Does anyone know what an Under Bleacher is please? It is listed as the occupation for one of my ancestors in the 1901 census. Thanks!
