There is some confusion here. There are two messengers within windows, windows messenger and messenger service. They are totally different. The one Val has shown how to disable is turned on by default and is a network admin tool but is now being spammed. Disable it ,you don't need it.This has nothing to do with windows messenger. Windows messenger is totally different you can remove it but I wouldn't do that. As Dierdrie says you can stop it starting with windows but that's not the end! If you go to outlook express tools/options you should uncheck "automatically log on to windows messenger" Yes, OE starts windows messenger as well. Bob

Well it seems to have worked but bit strange, MSN seemed to sign in when I connected, then went of leaving the big MSN box saying 'click here to sign in, Then a message came up at the bottom of the screen saying 'You have been signed out of Net Messenger services because you signed in at a different location' ???!!!! I only ever sign in from home :-( Sue:-)

It amazes me how each computer does different things. My machine would not run MSN with Windows Messenger, so I had to completely uninstall Messenger. Are they going to run the world one day?? !!!! spooky!

Val, Now I know PC has a mind of it's own, went to do as you suggested and it was already stopped!!! I have changed from Manual to Disable and I am now going to try a re-start on PC to see what happens. Sue:-)

Dee, Went to do as you suggested, only to find the box was already unchecked!!! think this PC has a mind of it's own LOL!! Re your Web cam problem, I noticed in MSN under tools there was a Audio/video tuning wizard, would that possibly sort your problem? Sue:-)

Hi, if you go to windows messenger, click on tools then options, you will get a box come up.....click on preferences.... The first option you will see is Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts. If you uncheck the box to the left of this option, then you shouldn't get windows messenger up as soon as you log on. I too prefer to use MSN and have used this option. However, for some reason, I find that if i want to use my webcam in conjunction with my mike...I can only do so on windows messenger and not on MSN...anyone know of a solution? Dee X

I would leave well alone Sue ,ihave both ,running quite happily together as have most other users. Trouble is you see ,if you start deleting bits of windows willy nilly you could land up causing a lot of bother. If you dont wan,t to use it ,ignore it .and use the other.Fred.

I have Windows messenger (already preloaded on PC) and MSM Messenger (downloaded by me). Can someone please explain the difference, and how do I get rid of the Windows version? Sue:-)
